One question after the other, hope you don't get too bored with me. I took off the valve covers today to paint them and just to see how it looked under there. There is a number stamped in the head, anyone who knows if any decoding is needed? I'm also interesed in where the fuel filter is located? I looked around but couldn't see it. I've read it's somewhere near the carb???
According to this page, http://buicks.net/shop/reference/bigblock_casting_numbers.html You have a set of 73-74 headsuzzled: The fuel filter is inside the metal cylinder that the fuel line screws into....I'll see if I can find a good picture. I know I have one somewhere.
:TU: , I'll get at it with the filter. The covers are still hanging in front of the gas skyscraper wall heater thing to dry. MMM might miss poker tonight beacuse of this. 73-74 heads?? Well, the valve covers were painted bottom first, red, blue, black.. The engine block has a big 73 code by cyl. 1. So if the engine is 73, I guess the head numbers are what they are supposed to be. I've heard that 73 engines should have blue valve covers, maybe these ones I have, got repainted at the factory to go with a 73 motor. So at some point the engine has been replaced, cause the car was made in late 71. uzzled: .. Oh well, the car will never be an all original I guess. If I stumble on a ws coded engine at the yard I'll get the heads I guess. There's this conv. 71 Centurion for sale here for 2.500$. I had a look at it about nine months ago, it was sitting in the parking lot at "rent a wreck", but now it's up for sale, maybe I'll have a look to see if it has posi and a ws engine in it. They've had it for ten years there, and it was previously priced at 3950$. The car's got a rust hole like a golfball on the hood and fender, needs new top, and the top motor doesn't work. Fixable? who' knows. I've got fenders, hood, top motor sitting here, maybe I'll offer them 1500$ for it... I don't think anyone will be too interested.
Kimson, Autozone should carry the fuel filter. That is where I got mine, but I remember something my Uncle and I contemplated over. Maybe it might have said "Chevy" on it. I don't remember. o No: 74', 75', & 76' will have blue valve covers. 71-73's should have red from what I've seen. Im might be interested Kimson :spank: But seriously, take some pictures of it if you can when you go and see it.
Ok, I had a quick look at the fuel filter situation. It's one metal line going into the larger cylindrical container which goes into the carb. Now the smaller metal line unscrews FIRST from the larger cylinder holding the filter then the cylinder unscrews from the carb right? It's all real tight, I just don't want to crack that line going into the fuel filter container... Is the order correct? Time for dinner, then back out again.
Yes, Hold a 1" open end wrench on the large fitting that houses the filter, and turn the outer fuel line with a 5/8" open end wrench. Then after the fuel line is out, you can unscrew the filter housing from the carb. Be careful not to over tighten the filter housing back onto the carburetor. They strip very easily. And then you are screwed...
Oh, I think the fuel filter only goes on one way if I recall correctly. Which I may not. ou: So just as a precaution mark the side of the old filter facing the carb. and put the new one in the same way. Adam, might be able to clarify. He has a Buick. :spank:
Ok, dinner is done, one team has won tonights survivor, and it's time for priority one, the geen giant.. Valve covers are dry, filter is figured out, I'll check in when I'm done.. Regarding the Centurion, I'll have a look at it on Monday to see what condition it is in. I'll get some pics and if smeone's interested I'll be glad to help as much as I can. Thanks alot guys!!
An open ended wrench will work, but if its real tight and/or hasn't been touched in who knows how long, a flare wrench would be safer.
Home free... It all loosened up, old filter didn't look bad at all, but it was worth the 2$ just to know. The covers are on, it looks just like in the movies now, noe it's just taking care of those cables going everywhere. I'm all set to install an HEI that's residing on the kitchen floor at the moment, but I'm hoping to do it with someone, since it involves timing and vacuum advance settings. That should hopefully cure it from some hickups and hard to start situations. Also a solution for cables and other junk... A new kickdown solenoid is also a target, since it's having some difficulties shifting between 2nd and 3rd under full throttle. Thanks alot everyone.. new deal tomorrow.
Ooops almost missed this one.. I took a shot of the other head number and it's 1238148.. According to the site provided by Adam the chart says Passenger side: 1238148 70-72? 455 and the one the driver's side: 1241860 73-74 455  uzzled: Well, in a hundred years what will it matter?
Well, in a hundred years what will it matter? exactly right, it shouldn't. the 455 ran the same compression from 71 to 74 so your combustion chamber volumes should still be matching up just fine. now if you had 69 head on one side and a 75 head on the other ...
