Proposal to boost the ethanol content of what passes for gasoline today from 10% to 20% up here in the midwest.

They would surly have to do a long long study to see how it ran in cars and farm equipment first.

    I agree!
It may hurt the very people they intend to help, such as the farmers.
In the owner's manual for a new 2005 Mercury outboard I bought, it specifically states NOT to use gas with more than 10% ethanol.

We will have to wait and see what the state's legislators do with it.
(This last session they didn't accomplish anything.)

  4. Would this make gas any less expensive to the buyer?

I bet not. i am sure it some sort of pay off deal between the law makers and oil companies. Get it going in another state first then see if it spreads.

I heard it takes more fuel to produce ethanol than it will save. The corn growers love it though.

The major thing I want to know is if e-85 will work in a carb'd car. If it did, I would be supporting it all the time. (108 oct, regular gas mixed with some kind of plant extracted alcohol and is 60% cheaper than gas out now.)

Id just like an afordable way to "water" down gas for near $1 a gallon. but still perform as good or better.

indy cars have been using ethanol for awhile. pure ethanol also burns w/o a flame so addatives are also needed.

I read a test on a small single cylinder engine (5hp) pure gasoline, 10%e and e-85 the test shows that e-85 made more hp than any of the others, less hydrocarbons, but used 30% more fuel by volume. all they did was increase the main jet size to bring it to the correct horsepower level. I'll try to post the link to the report. Tests we've done at briggs came out with simmilar results, but gummed the snot out of the carburetor. (we also ran the engine till it woulden't run anymore (bearing failure, or oil consumption issues)

from what I hear e-85 could be cheaper but the oil companies have something on it where there can only be like a 20% diffrence in price or so what's the point.

NJ gas is like that. it has special low e addtives but the mileage sucks.
