So much for the no politics rule. But it seems like as long as the opinions expressed agree with what most of the mods think, all bets are off I guess.

So the 2008 housing market crash wasn't because low income and poor credit holders,..IE minorities for the most part were given loans when the lenders knew good and well they couldn't pay them ,.......? That never happened?

Remember this was all but mandated by you know who,...

The poor are held down by the people they put in power because they believe the horse**** they fees them. I'm for EVERYONE SUCCEEDING,....but when you punish corporate America they will go elsewhere for labor and you get what we've had for over 20years now.

But back to the topic at hand,...I did see in the paper,..but a USA Today column,..they went out of the way to mention he was carrying the gun unlawfully on the premises. Now you can take that two ways,..to bring attention to the idea he done something wrong although it was good he did,..does that set a precedent now? Or should enforcement of said rule be set in place,....I'm for 100% open carry in all 50 states at all times,....so you know where my stance will be. If I'm a criminal I'm not going into dollar general to get my $53 for meth when I know there may be multiple individuals ready make my head into a canoe ,....

The ‘08 crash had a lot of causes, and people knowingly taking advantage by getting loans was definitely part of the problem…
But: people who weren’t trustworthy were advising many, many folks new to the housing market who weren’t well informed. My wife and I married in ‘01 and also bought a house. I worked every day so I let her do a lot of the looking on her days off. I told the agent ‘I have 10-12k to put down. I want a 30 year fixed at around 6%. I want a payment around $750.’ All the agents heard was ‘$750 a month’. They were showing us 200-300k houses and telling us ‘with this interest only mortgage you’ll pay 600 a month; and you can refi before the balloon is due! We’ll give you money back at closing to buy appliances! Or a boat!’ It was like arguing with a crack dealer. Had we not insisted that our budget was 150k or less, they would have put is in something that we couldn’t refi or unload-like so many others-in ‘07-10. A BUNCH of non-minorities bought houses with 100-110% financing, with NINJA loans, and realized a few years later they were fuct. And, when they also realized ‘we can’t refi, we can’t sell, we have no equity and we’re underwater…’ they packed up in the night and left.
I place a lot of blame on the mortgage brokers, lenders and agents who took advantage of buyers and the government guarantees. And the government for (1) forcing lenders to write loans while (2) guaranteeing them without oversight.

In my opinion, factual news reporting began swirling into the porcelain bowl shortly after Ted Turner began airing CNN. Subsequent news channels that followed were all chasing high ratings in order to increase advertising revenue. I have zero use for any of them, along with the established network news broadcasts.

I miss USA's Walter Cronkite, along with Canada's Harvey Kirk, and to a lesser degree, Lloyd Robertson. That was back when news was simply reported and you drew your own conclusions.

As I've aged, I wonder how much "crap"/propoganda the press has been dishing out throughout history. I do value a free press just as much as the right to bear arms. In my opinion, that's a very inspired piece of our US Constitution. I've read a few books on the men that setup the constitution and the process of creating it. It was not as civil of discussions as we think it to be. It was ugly, contested and quite warm in Philadelphia that summer according to what I've read.

To me, some good dialog with well thought out points is essential to helping people see your perspective. The value of listening to the other party is evident as I've been married the past three decades. Everyone wants to be heard. All of us have different perspectives and as I've learned to listen over the years, I value learning other perspectives. In some cases it's helped to change my opinions but mostly I am who I am based on my experiences. I do want other folks to be able to be free and "pursue happiness" as long as ALL of us are able to do similar (excepting destruction of property and alienating other's rights). I don't have to agree with anyone/everyone. I do have to allow them to be their unique selves and I ask the same in return for me.

Hopefully this thread can continue with discussion. I don't know that anyone is really going to get anywhere with arguing over the internet but it is a place for public expression. As long as posts are civil, I read and analyze the perspective of the poster.

I've read and watch some docudramas about the early period of the US. The Federalist Papers are quite good insight into how the founding fathers thought and debated.

Someone once said, "Your right to swing your arms ends at my nose."

I am quite libertarian in most of my views. You do you and don't worry about me.

    What would I do?

Ban and buy back AR type weapons. Limit clip sizes and buy back non conforming ones. Universal background checks and gun registration, no gun show loopholes. Mandatory concealed weapon permits. No open carry.

Does any of this prevent you from bearing arms or defending yourself?

Heck, worked wonders in New Zealand...

Doesn't anyone find it odd that Uvalde freaked out Canada enough to take serious action, but not us? We passed a watered down bill to do the bare minimum...

Okay, actually, Dallas now requires students to have mesh or see through backpacks. Real action right there..

Why are you so against semi automatic rifles? Or you just don't like black guns?

I will do all those things as soon as all the criminals do it first.
And I want a million dollars for my AR.

And they're called "magazines" not "clips". "Stripper clips" are used in WW2 bolt action rifles.

Banning one model of firearm does nothing. An AR15 is just a shoulder fired, gas operated semi automatic firearm. Just like probably 75% of rifles produced. There is nothing special about it. It is scary looking. It is not a "weapon of war". Never when I went to war did I carry an AR. The banning of one model seems like a stepping stone to logically ban the rest by displaying they are semi auto, detachable magazine ect.

By backs are.nothing more than govt giving you your own money or borrowed money back to you for an item you already paid for and paid taxes on.

Magazine (clips?) Limits target STANDARD capacity magazines. How.many rounds do you need to protect yourself? I don't know. Police, secret service military park rangers bank security don't carry arbitrary magazine capacities.
I used to carry a 5 shot .357. For about 20 years. The tactical situation now dictates to carry as much as possible. What changed my opinion was seeing people pulled out of their cars by people displaying social justice. I pictured my child.and wife being injured or worse. That night after work I taught my wife to operate my AR and my M1 Carbine (an actual weapon of war).

Again, clearly none of this worked in New Zealand, Australia, Norway, the UK, etc, etc.

My bad -- it did work in all those places...
