I haven’t seen a station with an attendant since the 1970s…they really still exist?

How many of us more seasoned folk once worked as gas jockey's? That was my mid seventies part time job to pay for premium leaded gas my car required. :p

Having to stop for gas after getting gussied up to the nines just might constitute poor planning. But I'm not sure since a suit and tie are foreign togs to me. :D

I fail to see any salient comparison to filling up a cart while wandering through your grocery store and driving up to a self serve gas pump. If there's no open pumps, your choice is wait a few minutes in your comfy, climate controlled vehicle, or drive to another location.

I don't get too upset if someone goes inside after filling up. Maybe their bladder's about to burst. It is a different scenario for big rigs at busy truck stops though. Most want you to move ahead first.

Gas station coffee!!!! Scare bleu!!:eek:

They claim it’s for jobs . Considering the worker shortage right now , probably better jobs to be had .
I wouldn’t care if they offered a “ full service “ lane for the Lazy / privileged people to choose. But don’t dictate to me some careless person scratching my car or making me late for an appointment searching for my fuel cap on MY car . Talk about overreach .

I think they should put the gas fill at the back of the car like our Buicks then watch the short dress girls fill that up ;):)

I never thought there would be self serv gas but here we are.
I don't like the self serve checkouts but it did work for the covy problem

There is no way I would spend all that time going to a store and wasting all that time going up and down isles for a half hour only to leave my cart because the line is too long. It seems long and I had to do this a couple weeks ago but it really only took about 10 minutes to get thru the line.

Leaving a cart full of groceries after spending all the time getting there and doing the shopping and leaving the cart is just plain stupid.
Have some dang patience and suck it up. This sounds like the same person that is up my butt cause my 80 mph is not fast enough too bad suck it up.

Remember self serve coming in in the late seventies. Eastern Mass. Did work briefly at a full serve Texaco, on route 9 in Wellesley Mass, in ‘90-‘91. It was an anomaly by that time. Owner had a thunderbird parts and restoration business as well, do remember moving parts thunderbirds with a sling tow truck. Spot it was on is probably some high priced yuppie office now.

When self-serve pumps were added at gas stations, the gas was cheaper than at the full service pumps. The groceries cost the same whether I use self-serve or have a cashier check me out. I am not opposed to self-service checkouts in grocery stores. I have even used them when I am buying a few items, but when I am buying a week's worth of groceries, I want a cashier to check me out. When our local Publix put in self-serve a few months ago, they were trying to force customers to use them. They had one REAL register open and four self-serve. They had two employees standing around watching the self-serve and three at the one real register. They would not open another register. And the one real register had a Shipt person buying six different orders. I was not happy and let them know it.

You joggled a thought loose. The grocery store is self serve already.

We're only taking about checkout and full service vs self service.

Next thing you know we the shopper will be handed a mop to clean the floor.....

The general public needs full service gas stations. Why because 80% of the dips hits with a drivers license dont know that a dip stick even exists..

If a machine wasn't already cleaning I would chuckle about the mop.

Here in KY we STILL have idiots smoking while at the pumps!

Yup. New Jersey doesn't allow self-service gas pumps . Milford, MA does not allow self-service either. BTW: When we lived in Massachusetts, we always planned a gas stop at the southernmost NJ turnpike plaza. New Jersey used to have the lowest gas prices from Massachusetts until North Carolina.

Yes grocery stores are mostly self service FOR PRODUCTS. This allows you to select the freshest perishable, canned, or packaged goods available. I despise buying milk having a BB date close to purchase date. I'll dig deeper or wait a day or two for fresher milk. I don't care if anyone says it's still good days afterward. I have to consume it. :D

Once my shopping is complete, a friendly person at the checkout counter asking if I found what I was looking for is appreciated.

I have no problem with pay at the pump gas stations as it saves me steps. Local Co-op station I patronize offers self and full service pumps. They also refund profits to their members. Win/win for me.

To me.........The defenition of a full service gas station is where the attendant pumps the gas,, checks the fluids..reports to the driver if any are needed ,,,, washes the windshield takes the money and returns the change...

for what its worth Oregon state law requires a attendant to pump fuel that is Not full service.....

I personally top off my tank before entering Oregon.

Theres a old station in the middle of town near the courthouse that was probably once full serve. Its just got the look. One can imagine guys in white pumping the gas and cleaning the windows. Often had the fleeting thought of buying the place and going back in time to make it a true full serve again. Wonder how it would fly. Probably never get past the EPA regs to install the tanks.

No, it would not Steve... and good luck finding the people to fill that entry level position.. would be tough in regular times, let alone now..

The rationalization of the use of self service and pay at the pump gas stations, vs automated checkouts is an interesting study in human perception.

Product on the shelf, product in the ground.. very little real difference here, other than maybe dairy, meat and produce.. everything else your just grabbing off the shelf with no thought. And none of that stuff on the grocery store shelf is prone to explosion and fire..

We as a collective, will resist any change, regardless of the reality of the change.

Heck, I have seen that with the board here.. we change something, make a ton better, and I still get complaints from some..

    Human nature I guess.

Welp, engine delivery trip today, and then back to the salt mines this evening..

    Peace out

Out of high school and going to Wentworth Institute I worked at a full service Mobile that was part of Allston car wash starting around 1980.
Have to admit I liked that job as you got to know alot of regulars plus a few local Boston Celtics and Bruins players.
Plus some nice cars came in on good occasion.. and got to work on my 66 GS and my friend on his 67 GTO on the down time as they were parked close.
Some regulars even gave me Christmas gifts as they just liked the service I guess.
The freezing winters though were awful. I have a essential tremor that comes and goes which gives me poor circulation. I could barely move my fingers to take money and give change.

On another note, I just came back from Stop and Shop and they have all BRAND NEW CARTS!!!
No more flat spot wheels and rattling carts all the way around the store. It might just help your nerves now dealing with self check out:D Now your sodas won't be flat when you get home.
They had that new cart smell:cool:

My first job was pumping gas at a Gulf Station in Newton Highlands, MA. The official name was Highland Gulf, but most folks called it Corvette Corner. We had a guy (Ken Barrie) who was the best carburetor and (Rochester) fuel injection guy that I ever knew. He had a '57 Corvette 3-speed (!) with FI. The Corvette guys flocked to the station because the dealers didn't have anyone who could service the injection. I really liked working Sundays and holidays - the boss would raise the price of gas 1 cent per gallon and give the money to the single employee who would work the 13-hour shift. This was in addition to his regular salary. No OT though. Fun times.
