i'm pretty sure you can back convert the 67-69 engines to a 1970s factory iron stage head but you'd need to pay extra careful attention to your cooling passages, oil passages, different size push rods and head bolts, etc.

of course, the 69 400 had a small valve stage head as an option ... you could have the valves hogged out on one of those and plop it on your 430 and everything should bolt up.

now alls ya gots to do is find one. :Dou:

yeah thanks for the info...something else... how much does porting the heads give hp wise??? i had a friend do a valve job and port the heads and intake... im not trying to build a race engine... just something i can have fun with around town...

how much does porting the heads give hp wise???

that depends altogether on how much of a 'port' job is being done and who's doing it. i'm sure a Buick pro like Scotty G, Mike T, JW or JB could get more out of it than your regular schmoe off the street.

and even they offer many different levels of 'port' jobs. JW himself offers 5 different levels of port work, 3 with iron heads.

the heads ARE the first target for any serious HP build though.

TA aluminum heads out of the box are said to add about 50 hp over stock iron heads. This is before porting. Out of the box they seem to flow in the ballpark with a set of iron heads that have had a great port job. From that info I will say that every additonal 10 cfm gained seems to have added another 10 horsepower. It is probably not a linear function but by this guesstimate porting al heads may get you another 20-40 hp over unported stock al heads.
