Anyone noticing a widening gap between regular and premium fuel?

Back in about 1986, I had a Dodge Shelby Charger (the tiny one, blue and silver stripes) that required 93 octane. I religiously put it in there for a full year. One time, I had filled up at the same station I always used and it started pinging on the way home. I took it easy but by the time I rolled into the driveway it had blown the head gasket. Complained to the station but they did nothing. I've hated owning a premium fuel only vehicle ever since.

I'm not surprised that you lose mileage with Ethanol-spiked fuel, but I am a little surprised that it's that much. Ethanol contains a bit more then half of the BTU's that gasoline does, so if you cut the gas with Ethanol you are cutting the total number of BTU's in the gallon. I did the math once (And I'm not going to do it again right now), but as I recall a 90-10 percent ratio of gasoline and Ethanol contains about 97% of the energy of a gallon of straight gas. I agree with Bill Maher, who said, and I quote - "It's a scam".

I actually loved that car. Had a friend with a blue one and I think silver accents?
