:af: I downloaded the new Norton anti-virus/internet security for 2005. My internet surfing experience is hell now. Every 5 seconds a window pops up telling me this or that is trying to access the internet! THINGS MUST ACCESS THE INTERNET, OR I CAN'T GET ON LINE!!!! :blast: Sorry, I am just venting here. Anyone of you guys have this new program? The old 2004 version worked fine most of the time! I spend most of my time with the dang security pop-up box than I do surfing! By the way, my security is set to medium. I have changed nothing except downloading this updated version of Norton. Thanks for reading, and advice is welcome.
Welcome to the new world order. A buch of A**h@les have let loose a hoard of adware that kill the internet experience. Its not Norton's fault. Do you run a firewall? Go to task Manager and look at the processes. You'll likely see soem funny ones like K.exe, Ads8OZ55.exe, FOX56M78.exe, Ccbt.exe, etc. I just downloaded Spybot and it found over 140 suspects. Check the other threads. - Bill
Check the options menu on the Norton programs...make sure you don't have SUPER high security that questions every move you make. I noticed that WIN XP did that on my dad's computer as a default. ....was really annoying - until I turned it off:grin:
I also just downloaded Spybot. I found a lot of suspected files. I was getting killed with pop-ups all the time. It seemed like everyone knew where I was surfing all the time. I would get pop-ups about credit cards with great rates while I was paying my credit card bill on a secure site :af: The pop-up blockers would do nothing. Since I've ran Spybot and removed all the suspect file, it seems to be way way better. Dan :3gears:
The FIRST thing I do when I get to a client who has that total POS Norton Internet Security is UNINSTALL the dang thing!!!!!!!!!!!!! Then reinstall it and ONLY install the anti-virus portion of it! Totally worthless POS for the average user. I'm a geek and Internet Security and Zone Alarm are garbage to me. I just don't have the time to screw around with the endless settings it takes to make it invisible.
Yep Adam, 2005 is out...and it sucks compared to 2004. It's complicated, and thier support is non-exsistant. It's warns you about EVERYTHING. I hate it. Have any of you guys downloaded the Windows XP service pack? It looks like Microsoft has created a anti-virus program that looks similar to Norton. I ran Spysweeper, and it found some crap on my PC. It is a nice program for spyware. Yardley, what do you use to protect your computer?
I think it's a conspiracy of the software companies that they sell you their s#%t and then they want to sell you on popup killers. These things totally kill the internet experience. Too many time I've been so bombarded with popups, that it slows my supposed high speed computer down to a crawl. The experience is so bad it puts me to sleep(literally!) This really pi##es me off!!!!! :af: I heard on the radio that if someone bought a brand new PC or laptop,in less than 20 minutes their computer is already infected. That is unbelieveable!
Anti virus software is okay but you need to get a good firewall protector like "Black Ice" or "Zone Alarm". I use zone alarm and its done great for me, also if you are using cable for your isp (internet service provider) you NEED a firewall. Without one I could telnet into your PC since its wide open to anyone that knows how to get around the internet. Is that a Beta version (test) or Norton or is it available to purchase in stores? I'm using the 2004 version and have not received a major upgrade to it in about 4 months so just checking.
I've been using Kerio Personal Firewall. It warns you everytime something tries to come or go - but you can tell it to remember your decision, so it won't keep asking about the same things. Plus, I don't use MSIE, and don't download from dubious sites or from emails from people I don't know. I don't run antivirus software, and have only been hit twice since 1995 - once was Nimda, the other Code Red - both snuck in. That's when I decided to get a firewall. (For the past 4 months I've primarily used linux, though, so its no longer an issue.)
I got ride of norton and went to AVG free version antivirus and spybot SD free version, neither one cost me a thing and so far no problems. I think charter has a firewall on there high speed cable internet but not sure on that. Tom
I had it for 5 minutes, it really sucks, after I installed it and after I had 10 more processes. I think Norton 2003 Pro is good, or Kaspersky Antivirus(which I use currently).
That is how I run my machine. Has worked out well. Never had a virus/spyware at home nor on my work machine. If it is a worm virus or something similar, Best Buy's Geek Squad gets rid of spyware as well as worm viruses for $60, all you have to do is drop it off for a few days. Is much easier to let them deal with the aggravation of trying on your own. :spank:
Give it a chance, maybe lower the security setting. After you answer a few of those it will settle down. When you start getting notices about attacks that were blocked you will like it. I am not a Norton fan, but run it on two machines.
Best Buy Geek Squad True, Best Buy offers a service to non technical people to clean and optimize their machines for a price. But the tools they use are much like the ones already stated in this thread! :Brow: I see my computer as this, like my buick, i dont trust nobody else with it, and definatly not let anyone turn a rench near it! I have it set up for everything I need, last thing i need is some "geek" to think its a mistake and undo majority of my work. just my .02 cents. I agree, I don't let people work on my machine either but for a non-techie, Norton does not detect a worm. Some can't get to the net to download spyware software, friends to put the software on a CD for them, etc. Can be frustrating to a 'user' as well as time consuming. If I didn't have the knowledge/resources, I'd much rather pay 60 bucks than spend time with it. Just an option for some people.
oh most definatly, as a last resort you always call in the cav (i love sayin that as a last resort i was artillery in a cav post) but sometimes you have to have SOME foresight and get the programs while its good, you dont do a tune up when you have blown your heads!
I heard that if you use a router between your machine and the cable service it acts as a firewall. Is that true? - Bill
I have this PC hooked to our good PC through a router card installed in it, I was just looking at the info on the box and it says it has a integrated network firewall. I don't know if our cable modem has a firewall or not, I need to find the box for it to check. Tom
