I just picked up a couple Antique power reel mowers. They are from the 1950's. One is a Cooper Clipper and the other is a Eclipse Rocket. I remember cutting the grass at my grandparents with an old reel mower. They cut so nice and sound cool as he!!. Anyone else have old reel mowers? Or parts for the above mentioned mowers? Bob
I have an old craftsman and a reo royale. I'm not sure of the date on the reo, but the 1HP, 5ci Briggs and Stratton Model 5S motor on the craftsman is dated 1951. The craftsman works, but the handle broke off on one side where it mounts to the mower, and it is missing the wooden rollers. The blades are rusty and unbelieveably dull. It sat out in the weather for the better part of 30 years. The reo needs a new coil. I pulled the motor apart years ago (I bought it when I was 14, in summer '93 for $12.50) and it has been in a box ever since. It's an interesting design, the camshaft only has one lobe, and the cam is also the PTO! Once I got my hands on my '79 Cub Cadet "85 special" riding mower - turned homemade go-kart, I kind of forgot about the other "projects". :Brow:
We should start a reel-type mower resto section on this board....and when is the first BPG Reel Mower Nats going to occur????  :beer
I have one of those too. I made a couple of passes across the yard, then got out the riding mower and finished it  In all seriousness, the reel mower doesn't seem to do as good of a job as a modern rotary style mower, I'm guessing that is due to the fact that the sucking action of the fast-spinning blade helps to lift the grass up. Also, the reel mower shoots the grass straight out the back, all over the operator. ou:
My brother and I used to race while cutting our Grandparents lawn. Great fun hitting apples and walnuts with throttles wide open.
