Found the Tri-Shield frying pan mirror off my 70 s1 4-speed car that I replaced with an NOS. Still in decent driver quality condition except the mirror head flops around like a rag doll. I see no way short of busting out the nice original glass to access that area to locate the failed part. Any ideas?
John, this seems to be a fairly common problem with the manual mirrors. I've got 1-2 used Tri's like that, I've got an NOS mint trishield like that with missing glass. It depends how bad yours is...real floppy or just a bit loose. Inside there is a small triangle piece that covers the ball. That piece was like riveted on...I forget, actually! What happens is one of those 3 points breaks, and the mirror becomes worthless. I think Jason Cook (or somebody here) said you could drill the posts that hold triangle piece and drill and tap them with tiny screws. That was my plan, but it's on my long list because I have an NOS one on my car now.
Thank you Frank, I can visualize how it must have been secured from your description very well. I wonder if I could use an aerosol straw to spray a paint or decal stripper into the housing (at post or glass edges,IF that doesn't strip glass silver too of course)to get the mirror adhesive to turn the glass loose so I can reuse it after making the repair? Hmmmm or heat gun it.......... Well, I definitely have time either way and I love a challenge! lol Thank you very much for taking the time to help me understand what's going on inside there : )
