I wanted to watch the beach landing sequence of Saving Private Ryan today, being D Day and all. I have watched this movie twice since I got the DVD, maybe 2 years ago. With my stereo channels running the audio, those 12" woofers on each side of the room really get a workout.

Well, the DVD player won't read it. Eventually, I get a "this player cannot read this type of disc. Please insert another" message

Wha...I have watched it on that DVD player before! Any other DVD works fine in the player

On another DVD player, there is a 'disc error' message, and on my PC, it locks up the system

Physically the DVD looks flawless. I've never heard of this happening, where a previously good DVD that is kept in good condition goes bad.

My question is: Anyone ever had dvd's that are actually worth a Sh1TT??? I loved them in the beginning, but after throwing several away, and the others not working half the time, I have learned to hate them. The players are about the same quality too.

I've had DVD's Go bad, mainly the Double sided ones. I for one hate DVD's, Sure the picture and sound is better, but freezing, skipping, that stupid blocky picture with the dirty discs, bad compression on old DVDs Makes me miss VHS.

Absolutely Chris - I learned ALOT when I produced the BPG DVD's and one of the things is that DVD's most DEFINATELY have a "Shelf Life".

Several factors are involved, first and foremost is the quality of the blank disc. Suffice it to say that just about ANYTHING you can purchase retail is of marginal "B" and mostly "C" grade - "A" grade just is not available retail to the consumer. Secondly, is the quality and speed of the burning process that writes the discs - similar to a Vinyl recording there is similar things to WOW and Flutter - but for an optical imprint. Over time, marginal quality burns on marginal quality disc stock ends up as a "Sum of errors" where you can not play the disc because of multiple factors adding to each other, not usually ons specific fault. Third, is any kind of label or marking you use on the disc. The most safe method is NOTHING AT ALL. Labels, Marker ink, printer ink all changes the reflective properties of the disc. Even the Glue and even-ness of its distribution on the label back can cause problems.

There are websites that I did extensive reading and downloaded testing programs to evaluate both the quality of the stock I was producing the BPG DVD's on as well as MY particular burner's ability to make a "Clean" image. These guys (who frequent and own these sites ) idea of a friday nites fun is to go out and buy a few 50 packs of DVD's, Identify the manufacturer (MIJ - Made in Japan being better than MIT- Made in Tiawan), burn the discs at various speeds and report back their burn graphs and staticstics......or retrieve a burn form say 6 months ago and evaluate the degrdation over time. True Geeks .... guys after my own heart :TU: :Dou:

Never had that happen with a DVD, but had an old Don McLean audio CD blow up on me recently.

Neither my CD players or CD ROMs would play it, yet it wasn't dirty or scratched. I had a little luck on my linux box, so decided to rip it before it was totally dead.

Grip had a hard time, but was slowly making progress. Very slowly. I figured I'd go to bed and it would be done in the morning.

About an hour later I was awakened by a high-pitched "pop." The CD had exploded in the ROM drive. I managed to save the drive :).

I think your having what they call dvdrot. It happened to me with my Rammstein Live Aus Berlin dvd. It worked fine in my dvd player then I get one with 5.1 Dts so it should rock out great with the speakers, I put it in nothing. I am still pissed.
