Any issues with a 73 head on a 72 block? I have coolant leaking to the crankcase.

I prefer the 73 and later heads for street use especially since i have never had one crack. Not a bad idea to find a set and plug them, however if your heads have not cracked yet they most likely will not crack in my opinion.

On the 73 and later blocks there is a part of the block that covers up the scallops so using the plugs is esentially the same thing in my opinion.

Oh.. I thought there were coolant passages in the block as well. So, I was wrong somewhat in my previous reply..

Correct, there are no passages in the later block for those scallops the block merely supports the gasket behind the scallops. Without this support behind the gasket the coolant leaks right into the crankcase like what happened to you.

Very nice job on the blocking of those passgaes btw.

And while you're at it you might as well plug the egr ports and the crossover.:TU:

This is a 71 block. You can see that there is only a single scallop in between the middle cylinders. In 73 there is the double.

That's not a SBB.... On a pre 73 SBB the coolant ports are at the front and rear of the block and there is nothing where the center scallop is that you are showing. Apparently on a 73+ block there would be two of those little bumps on the block..

Here is a 73=80 type block.
