My sister has a 1997 BMW Z3. The air bag light just recently came on over the last 2 weeks. It's staying on all the time too. The car has 74k on it...I'm wondering if it could be tied in to a "scheduled service"? Any ideas? Also, is there a way of resetting the oil change indicator other than thru the dealership, with their 'special' resetting tool? TIA
Im not a BMW tech but I do know that when an airbag light is on that means the curcuit has been broken somewhere. The air bag system is on its own system. It can have a simple as a sensor gone bad, or a wire clipped into somewhere, or the computer shot craps. I have never seen one "JUST" come on for no reason but there is a first time for everything. The dealer can plug in a scanner to it and find out which part has thrown the code out. Then estimate it for repair. At this time the ABS is no longer working so she will be at risk if she has an accident.
I work as a BMW collision repair tech.Mikes general assessment is pretty accurate. The ABS system is not affected by the Air bag or the SRS system. It will have to be checked by a tech. It will need a part or some labor to be fixed.I dont think it would be part of the sched maint. There are aftermarket oil resetting tools.I have seen them on ebay or try BAVauto or other BMW aftermarket retailers.I have never used one though.HTH
