This is for @tubecatgs This shifter is rough!! It's definitely seen better days. Looser than a $20 prostitute (adjusted for inflation)
Upon inspection, I found the recessed area that the main pin seats in was mangled. Looks as though the pin wasn't seated properly and thr bolt was just tightened up. I tried fixing it but I wasn't comfortable re using it. Plus its heavily pitted. A main case is a $35 part so... Unfortunately, I had none in stock. I did however have a very nice rebuilt chevelle shifter. So I pirated the main case off that shifter to expedite the process. Here's what it's supposed to look like- The handle receiver was snot welded to convert it to a factory "bayonet" style. I had a nice factory handle receiver in stock..
So on to assembly. The handle receiver/ selector pin carrier assembly is a little tricky to assemble. Especially the reverse detent spring. I have a very simple method of installing it though. No need for special jigs... Selector pin installed-
Now its just stacking the levers and shims in order then sliding it all into the case and putting the main pin in. New clips and isolators for the factory 5335 handle. Quick function check and its ready for another 50 years
Looks good! Will most hurst competition shifters work on a 4 speed swapped GS, or do you need a 3138 shifter?
Jason The shifter in my 70Gsx is a correct 5335 handle with a 3138 base after having the base rebuilt the shifter handle is further to the right. I have compared it's position to my 72 GS and there is a sizeable difference . Ever hear of such a thing ? Is this an easy fix or one you might be interested in ? Thanks Bob Buick
Jason Thanks for quick reply . shifter is still in car when I remove it I will post some pics Bob Buick
