I have just started testing a fairly interesting 455 engine. This engine is built around the stock appearing category, needs to look stock, but inside can be anything.
The recipe .030 over flat top pistons, ported cast iron heads, ported cast iron intake, opened up like a performer on top and the center divider cut down about 3/4 inch.
The engine will run with ported exhaust manifolds but currently has headers on it.
He was interested in the bell maxi 3 cam, but I don't buy anything from bell, so I had a cam ground by Bullet racing cams, it has 234 degrees at .050 and 261 at .050 on the exhaust, we were wanting to help the exhaust due to the manifolds. The lift with 430 rockers is .534 intake and .553 exhaust, the cam was installed to 109 intake centerline.
    head flow is as follows:
    lift intake exhaust
    .100 86 62
    .200 150 116
    .300 212 156
    .400 262 190
    .500 275 206
    .550 285 209

The interesting thing is that this thing idles at 900 rpm with 11 to 12 inches a vacuum, at this altitude.

So far I have run the engine with a tried a true 1000 demon.
this thing made peak torque at 4300 rpm of 590 ft/lbs.
it made 537 horsepower at 5100 and was still at 530 5600.

I did see some 600 ft /lb torque spikes.
this engine will go into a 4 speed car, not a stock muncie I might add.
The engine is making over 500 horse at about 4500 rpm.
He wanted the high compression because most of the guys that run stock appearing are running super high compression.

Anyway,, I thought the power was pretty interesting considering the intake, I can only imagine what it would do with something like ans sp-1 or cool runner.

Interesting combination Jim & very impressive results for an iron engine. Nice head flow #'s too. I have had good luck with the maxi 3. If you could get a Maxi 3 cam , you will be long retired, took me months to get mine:Do No: I know a few stock appearing guys run the Maxi 4 spec. cams since they run very high compression with .2-.3 better than Maxi 3 in the 1/4 mile. Hey Jim, These are good starting numbers indeed. Any chance of getting numbers switching to a stock intake? And a good Qjet?
Is the Bullet cam a solid or hydraulic (lobe centers?) and how would it compare to the 'stock appearing' solid grind you sell? Nice results!

I'd be curious to see the numbers with ported exhaust manifolds!

I will be trying a qj carb and ported exhaust manifolds on this, the intake will remain the same. Jim Burek

Well I did some more testing. We made a peak of 551 horspepower at 5900 rpm with the qj carb, the torque was down a little over the demon to about 585 at 4300 rpm. The carb is a little leaner than the demon so that makes sense.

This engine has pulled 545 ft/lbs of torque at 3000 rpm through the headers.

Last tests were done with ported exhasut manifolds, the results were still pretty good, peak torque was 560 at 4100 peak horsepower was 516 at 5800. It still had over 500 ft pounds at 3500 rpm. It's sometimes hard to get good readings down at lower rpm beacuase alot of times I am not a full throttle untill the engine is over 3000 to 3500 rpm.

Overall, I'd have to say that this is one potent 455. I fhe can get this thing to hook on polyglass tires, it will be fast.
The car is a 4 speed as well. Jim Burek P.A.E. ENTERPRISES
