I am bored here at work, so I've been daydreaming about engine parts. :eek2: Been doing alot of research here, :TU: and this is what I have come up with. So what do you all think of this combo, so I can start collecting parts.

73 455 block stock rods and crank, ARP bolts
    zero deck the block
    standard oiling mods
    9.5 to 10ish to 1 forged pistons
    Mildly ported 430 heads/polished chambers/Stage 1 valves/ARP head studs
    TA SP1 intake
    850+cfm holley carb
    MSD ignition
    TA 413 cam/matching springs/pushrods/grooved cam bearings
    2 in primary headers
    3 in exhaust
    TH350 a "good" 2500-3000ish stall
    3.73 gears

    And....150-200 shot :Do No:

I was thinking this would be a nice combo to run on the street, not too wild until you hit the spray? From what I've read the 413 cam has a decent idle to it.

    My Q's are:

Anybody running A/C with this cam?
Will it blow up with the spray?
What do you all think it would run in the 1/4? 3900 lbs car
Stay below 10 to compression w/ iron heads for 93 octane?
HP estimates on the motor? (Was thinking mid-upper 400's?)

Steve have you met Kerry here in Austin Yet. He may be a great resourse for you. He sprays a 225 shot on a 464. low (teens)10 second car. Let me know and I will put you in contact. :beer

    Steve,
I have about 300 miles on this combination. Just put it in 2 weeks ago. I have an 800 q-jet and am running 1 7/8 headers. It seems to be running better all the time as it breaks in.

Unless you are going to race all the time go with the smaller headers. You will have better idle, torque and gas millage (gas millage is pretty bad so far as is.) I am planning on adding air next year and see no problem with that. An air conditioner compressor is not a big torque load on a 455. You will not be turning more than 6000 with your setup so there should be no problems there. I would plan on an x-pipe for the street. Cannot believe how much louder this is than my old motor (stage 1, 113 cam.)

Highly recommended- send your oil pump/timing cover to Brian Earick to be blueprinted. I have 30+ pounds at idle and about 60# at 2500. I plan on going to see him next summer for a dyno tune. Just a great person to work with. Edit: Just noticed you are in Texas so check out Jim Burek on this, I am sure he can perform the same service.

If you have to go with a Holly go the next step up and get a 950 HP.

Your combo sounds VERY similar to mine. About the only difference is I run Poston's 113A cam. But if you check both cams specs, you will find they are very similar.

As my signature says, I've run a best of 11.86 at almost 112 mph. And my car weighs almost 4250 with my 200 lbs sitting in it.

    Here's my combo:
455 block, pistons are .003 in the hole, with oiling mods to cover also
    stock bottom end
polished rod beams to remove casting
TRW aluminum pistons (true compression 10.13 to 1)
entire bottom end balanced with new flywheel and balancer
430 heads ported with Stage 1 valves, combustion chambers polished and matched
    SP1 intake
    Holley 950HP carb
Ignition has an Ignitor 2 setup and MSD 6AL box
1-7/8 het-hot coated headers with X-pipe 2.5" mandrel bent full exhaust system
    TH400 with 3300 stall 9.5" custom converter
    3.73 10-bolt posi
Full polygraphite suspension with front/rear sway bars, air bags out back, adj. upper control arms and boxed lowers from HRPartsNstuff.

I polished the snot out of my combustion chambers and even removed the casting tab. Polished up the tops of the pistons too and removed casting button. I run 93 octane and have never had a detonation/pinging problem.

No nitrous, but I've been told that a 125-150 shot will knock a full second off the quarter mile time. I'm just nervous about the laughing gas and will probably never use it. Ihave to say my car has a/c, but I have yet to have the system charged and actually use it. If you use the HP calculators online, my combo comes up @520 HP, I'm assuming at the flywheel. So that would put about 425 HP or so at the rear wheels.

    Good luck with your buildup.

    Phil

Thanks for everyone's input. Phil/TXGS, I will get in touch with you as this comes together. Right now I am just collecting all the parts. I am contemplating doing the port/polish on the 430 heads myself (already have them), been doing some research so hopefully I won't mess them up. As some of you know I am running a SB chebby, with bigger cam specs than the TA 413. It idles like poo, so I am hoping it will be as fast/faster than my current setup, with improved driveablity. And of course it will be more original/buick powered!!! Just purchased a SP1 from RACEBUICKS, so it is coming together slowly. 70gsconvt, it takes a 150 shot for me to run 11's, your giving me a lot to look forward to!
