I finally reached my goal of a 13 second time slip with my 350 powered '69 GS California!! :beer

I ran a 13.85 @ 98.1 mph at the Musclecar Shootout at Brainerd Intl Raceway this past weekend. The temp was in the upper 80s, so this wasn't a cool weather fluke!

The best part was having Jim Weise witness it and tell me, "that's a hell of a run for a 350 car.":TU: Thanks Jim!!!

The 350 is a '69 block bored .030 over with forged 10:1 pistons, stock rods/bolts, balanced assembly, mild porting on the stock '69 heads, stock '69 rocker assembly with TA valve springs, TA 290H-94 cam, stock intake manifold and quadrajet, stock points ignition, TA headers and a 2 1/2" exhaust with an X-pipe. An 8.5" posi rearend with airbags in the coils and 3.23 gears move the P215-70-14 radials. The car weighs 3740 with me (210 lbs) and a 1/2 tank of gas in it.

I did have some problems with wheel spin off the line, I usually had to pedal it once or twice to get the tires to hook. 60' times were from a 2.00 best with no spin to 2.3s. The 13.85 run had a 2.13 60', so it should run some better times if I can get it to hook consistently.

When I first bought this car it ran 16s @ 88mph. I tuned the numbers matching 350 down to a 14.60 @ 92mph, then swapped out the drivetrain to save it the abuse after 100 or so 1/4 mile blasts and the need to hit the 13s!

The next goal, 100 mph!!

    Man,
You made my day.I am hoping to see some mid 13s (or any 13s for that matter!)with mine. Now I see that is not out of reach.I know someone who might be getting a little worried knowing 13s can be done with a 350.Huh Kevin?
    Congrats!

    My goals

I hope to break into the very high 12's with a 100HP shot of juice.

    I tend to be optimistic.

    pistons?

Where did you buy your pistons? Would it have ran faster with an aluminum intake? Thanks.

Pistons are TRW, bought from a local speed shop. There are two different pistons, 8:1 and 10:1, so make sure you get the correct ones for your application. I think the 10:1s are TRW L2343.

There are also several other manufacturers that make forged pistons for the 350, the NHRA page lists VENOLIA 350, TRW L2343, SEALED POWER 2232P, NYLEN 971P, ROSS 68538 and SEALED POWER 340P as acceptable stock replacements. I'd guess all of these are 10:1 or better pistons.

Would it have gone faster with an aluminum intake? Maybe. If I had more porting work, converter, cam, and gear for sure it would. But with an aluminum intake I can't race in stock class!

    hmmm

    Your comments are interesting Ken.

I spoke to TA earlier this summer and they were out of Forged Pistons. My machine shop had to find some through their connections to get mine.

I was told the ones currently available are really meant for TR crowd (dished pistons).

Hyper T's were out as well.

    Just my .02

    Forgeries..

You could be right about low stock now, I bought my pistons a couple years ago and didn't have any problems getting them.

If my memory is still good, I think the pistons I have are dished as well. I thought all 350 pistons were dished, the 8:1s more than the 10:1s??

I'm sorry. I didn't know you were in a weight class; I need to read these post carefully.

    don't know

I can't say exactly. I just know when the Piston Shortage Panic arose, I suggested the 3.8 piston. My guy said "NO MATCH", due to the piston's dish.

    Not enough compression apparently.

If you want pistons, I would recommend looking sooner than later.

    GSXMEN Got Jesus?

Those Sealed Power 340P pistons are a CAST replacement for the high compression '70 style pistons. They have an .085" dish. The low comp. pistons are 657P, with a dish of .245".

I had to use your info to asked a loaded question on the chevy board. I just wondered what others got in their cars and what years in stocker class.

After I got done explaining that year and modle of car didn't matter to me, I just wanted to see numbers of other guys in the stocker class with their chevy and no NOS.

After the barrage of how NOS is cheaper than building the motor right. [ sounds chevy]

They then called foul that those times were bogus for that cars weight , stock parts and gears could not of been a legal stocker.

I did get a useful link for some info

    http://www.superstockforum.com/

But then had to drop the bomb that it was a Buick 350, not a chevy. It got very quiet after that.

Matt :puzzled: [ just couldn't help myself, thinking about running a stocker]

kens car does not fall into NHRA stock class for two reasons. 1 , high lift cam. must have stock lift, rest is up to you. 2 , ported heads, the big nono. Kens car seems to be a well thought out combo and my congrats to him. it does fall into muscle car stock class, just not NHRA, IHRA. I hope to get my car that fast soon as I am in the middle of my 350 rebuild too. good luck to all, chris

If you cant beat them join them!

Ken first off all: Congrats!! :beer To me you are (to) fast any way!

What converter / stall speed do you run now?
Did you have to degree/ correct the camshaft sprockets when you put that ballistic Buick together?
I am asking because I have some serious problems :puzzled: http://www.v8buick.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=26277
and RELY need some help getting back on the right track :Do No:

I have two questions. I am rebuilding my engine 68 350 4bbl. Where did you get the 10 to 1 comp forged pistons. Also is it true that you will get less proformance out of your engine if you dont bore your cylinders but replace the pistons?( I read this on the keith black webpage)
