Well...... We bought a nice little 2002 Hyundai that has a litle front end damage. I fixed most of the repairs, but noticed that the engine was sitting in the bay just a little crooked. Turns out the front mount was bent...... and to make matters worse, the timing belt was no longer on all of the pullys. :ball:
Needless to say, there is damage........ got a new engine coming for it..... it is not good. In the photo, thos are what are left of the valves (DOHC) laying on top of the pistons. :eek2:

Did you drive it or hear it run before you bought it???????? It is less than 2 years old, isn't it covered under warranty?

They used to say "I think the engine dropped a valve". In your case you say " The engine dropped the valves".

I do believe that is what they call an interference engine, one that the valves smack the pistons when the timing belt breaks, or in your case, falls off the pulley.

I believe Hyundai has the best warranty in the business, 10 years, 100k miles.

Only covers the original owner though, once re-sold, no warranty!!!

Great for them, as they get PR for a long warrantly and most cars are sold in the first couple of years.

Hyundai builds a pretty decent car for the money.

    Mike,

    That sucks.

mike, im curious, what are the circumstances with the timing belt? how many miles on the car? did the engine quit while you were driving? something caused the belt to jump. maybe a seized belt tensioner or pulley? those timing belts run the water pump, make sure you check these things, because you will have to transfer over all pulleys and the tensioner to the new engine. i have yet to see any 2002 model eat a timing belt. i would definitely try and get some help from hyundai!

Nope...no warranty. It was one we bought through an insurance company that had some body damage. *I* did not buy this one...thank goodness, or I can imagine the hell I would get. My brother, on the other hand, gets to hear me giving him hell.
It'll be good as new soon....found a used engine with 12k on it.....just waiting for it to get here now I guess, so I can drop the cradle for the third time on this thing. I had to put the cradle back in so we could roll the car out for the rest of the week so I can work on other disasters.

This week is starting off reeeaaall well......

    Re: hyundai

This is one that got it in the right front...it bent the front engine mount , which is what the cam belt tensioner sits on. Looks like the cam belt rode right off the pully after that....and looks like it was going at a pretty good speed when it did this. I have never seen valves shattered like that. It also punched holes in 3 of the pistons........ kinda scary....I bet it sounded real nice when it happened. :Brow:

Mike...you guys sure know how to have fun!!:eek2: :Dou:

    That's one UGLY engine!!

Back in the summer of 2001, I did 3 complete valve jobs on some 2000 Hyundais (slim chance it could have been a Daewoo product)!!:spank: In each case, the valve seats and the face of the valves were pretty pitted.

Not sure what the exact problems were...or why we were seeing ONE YEAR OLD STUFF!!:blast: Needless to say, I wasn't too impressed.

One could have been a fluke (you'd think)....but THREE OF THEM - the same summer?!:error: :Do No:

Those cars are junk. Hard to beleive people actually spend hard earned money on those turds. Yeah great product with an even better warranty.

What's really scary on these things is that when you disassemble them ....has anyone noticed that any bolt that goes into the block only goes in about 1/4 of an inch to 1/2 inch?! I actually found the front of the block having hairline cracks around alot of the bolt holes. I guess I'll be going to put longer bolts in all the mounts when this thing goes back in. I can now see why the mounts bent..... as it ripped one bolt right out of the block....taking a little chunk with it.
Ya...these things have the best warranty in the business.....but only if you have all the major service intervals completed and documented by a Hyundai dealer's shop. They are gonna get your money in either repairs, or a new car when yours breaks and you have to buy parts....or a new one. Total Korean crap! :af:

I still can't beleive people buy these things new and are so proud of them. Absolute garbage, but hey the Korean guy who makes pennies a day and struggles to feed his family while slaving in their factory will thank you.
