I had my alternator tested last night and tested low, no big deal the "new" one isnt too expensive only thing is for the test unit they had listed part for my alt is 7133 and the plug adapter that was listed to fit that alternator was not like the one from the alternator on my car the one on my car is identically wired but my 2 pins are parallel { l l } while the adapter's listed pin receptacles were for horizontally opposed pins { - - } any ideas what the deal is i'd really rather not change the plug on the car if i can avoid it this for a 1972 buick gs 350 with a/c. They didnt have the "new" alternator in stock so it may have just been a documentation burp but im not sure. Also is there a bracket to replace the a/c version of the alternator mount i think i may take the compressor out bevcause it's just dead weight ?

That's the wrong alt. Yours has an external regulator and uses the "II" pins. The one they are trying to sell you is for later models with the internal regulator and has pins like this "- -". You can wire that newer style a special way to work in your car but that's not necessary.......I'd get the correct part. I think '72 was the last year for your early style alternator. :bglasses:

The internally regulated alternators are much better. They put out triple the amperage at idle. It's worth converting to this type of alternator IMHO. It's a bolt in with a few wiring changes. Read this link.

I went with a single self exciting alternator and it charges better and quiet operation, AL.

I did the same thing a long time ago. I just didn't want to make a complicated suggestion to someone of whom I don't have a clue about his mechanical abilities. You can just do what I did and use a 78 amp alt and make it self excitable by running a jumper from the fat wire on the back of the alt to pin #2 on the side. I've been using mine that way for years without a problem. :bglasses:

Joe, it gets better, the alternator is listed for a "Bob-Cat" skid loader  , the only thing I had to do was go to a dual grove pulley. AL.

    hmm electrical work maybe not

so if i understand this right jump from the #2 pin on alt to the post on the back, attach the wire normally for the post back to the post but with that new jumper running to pin 2 ,and connect the blue wire from the reg to the #1 pin ?,and also is it possible that since they had an internally regulated alternator listed in thier test unit as my alt that that is what made it test bad? it seemed to be working fine but my amp meter was pegging while driving it would peg at like 35 mph but if i stopped and reved the car it would chill like normal so i figured bad reg take it off get new one test alt also what about remounting alt w/o a/c compressor? any changes to mounting brakets necessary?

Just a differnt point of view.

The old style is tough as nails and adequate. Get say a 65 amp rebuilt from NAPA. I paid about $35. I would just get the correct one and a new external reg. and be done.

The external regs are only say $12 at NAPA.
