I want to install a new 100 amp alternator to repalce the original one on my 1970 455 Stage I motor and noticed that there are two plugs with 2 wires each going into the old alternator and only one place to plug wires into the new one. Does anyone have a diagram on the rewiring or know where I can look for one? Thanks.

    Barry,
If you go to www.buickperformance.com and scroll down to Restoration/modifications, there is an interesting article on Alternator upgrades. That might answer your questions. You are going from an externally regulated alternator to an internally regulated one. The correct plug to fit into the new alternator is available at parts stores under the "HELP" line. Hope that helps.

Thanks Larry. I just printed it out and I'll review it in the morning. I also found a site at www.madelectrical.com that has more info on the different alternators than I really care to know but it certainly explains the benefits of 3 vs 1 wire alternators.

My existing alternator does not have an external regulator that I can find but has two places where 2 wires go in and I'm hoping one of the sets is the same as the big BAT connection on my new one plus I found a plug on top that when removed has two male connectors inside so now I have things to experiment with. I'll keep my fire extinguisher handy! Thanks again.

You might want to consider the Alternator Upgrade Conversion Harness that Year One sells. I've put this on both my skylark and electra, and use the 94 Amp 12-SI alternator.

On the skylark, I have dual electric fuel pumps, a whole slew of gauges, and an aftermarket head unit for the stereo. With this new alt., I can run all accessories in the car, and it can keep up no problem just idling in drive.

    Good Luck!
