Check out http://www.kenbrunomotorsports.com/index.htm . I had him restore my Skyhawk's alternator over the winter. Did a beautiful job.
If you want your alternator (or starter) to genuinely look like new, try John Pirlke Restorations . I had him do my starter & alternator and am very happy. He does mostly Corvette component restoration, but it's all GM; so this was right up his alley. John p.s.: Welcome back, Brad!
It depending on what you mean with restoration. If it is just a matter of repairing an alternator that does not charge anymore, it is quite straight forward. You need bacic hand tools, a volt meter, ohm meter and a diode tester. (There is many good multimeters around, but the "Fluke" 77 or 87 are among the best). You would also need a cleaner/solvent for electric wiring, and possibly a soldering iron. (You should allready have all this, you driving an old car  ). If the alternator does not smell or look toasted/burned, what you need of parts are in most cases the two bearings, a new set of brushes , (and a complete voltregulator, if one is fitted to the alternator body). I don't know the price of a rebuild alt. in the US, nor the parts price, but out of pure curiosity I would try to repair it myself. It should not take you more than a couple of hours. If this is not a show car, go to Autozone and get a Duralast, lifetime unit. If your alt is original, put it in a box and save it for "someday"
