Alternator Charge wire...Where does it go?

So I'm trying to replace this ancient wire (fire trap) since I'm putting a 12si in the car. But I wonder where it goes from the back of the alternator. Does it run to the starter and mount where the pos battery cable hooks up?

I want to bypass the starter and go right to the battery. Is this OK? Everything I've read seems to indicate so.

 

It's ok to connect directly to the battery.
BUT you need to connect the controlwire directly to the battery too. Else you'll risk overcharging the battery.
