Was out playing with my Electra and G-tech last night and made a couple of pulls. After a run without the stock aircleaner assy I decided it have to go. Even with a new filter, it is holding the car back with a tenth or two up to 60. So, my question is, which open element aircleaner is the best? Price vs quality and performance. Is the K&N s as good as the pricetag? The engine is all stock with Rochester carb and a HEI distributor.

I run the K&N Flow Control air cleaner, mostly due to low hood clearance on my '67 Wildcat with the SP1 intake manifold. Nothing but good things to say about performance, though it's not been to the track yet with that combo.

Don't know if this applys to your car but I used to run a KN 14X4 drop base aircleaner because they said it would be just as fast as running without at the strip. Well to cut right to the chase my car went 2 tenths faster when I removed it at the strip. By the way it's a 455 Skylark. I've heard lots of bragging about how good they are but it didn't work for me :Do No: .

My K&N X-stream filter top cut a consistent 2 tenths off my 1/4 mile time in Salem last year.

But Adam, have you ever made a run without an aircleaner at all?? I thought, wow I have the state of the art aircleaner and a Chebby guy talked me into taking it off and just like majic 2 tenths. Way back in the olden days we never used an aircleaner at the track and sometimes on Saturday night in town. :Brow:

I did once in Flint, but the car fell on its face halfway down the track:laugh:

I feel more comfortable with at least SOME protection over the carb though.

I did the no air cleaner run on my 69 Stage 1 ages ago and if fell on its face 1/2 way down the track too.
Well, it turned out that the carb sucked the hood insulation directly above into it and blocked off the air flow. :jd: :Dou:

Well Adam all cars react differently, thats why you do strip/road testing, right. I'd never run on the street anymore without one but for 2 tenths I'll risk runing it a couple miles at the track. :Brow: And Mark, there's supposed to be insulation under the hood?? The guy that owned it before me must have sucked his all down the carb!
