Open element or factory ram air set-up? Which is better? I have an open element, but really love the looks of the ram air. Any advice???

I talked to John Osborne 2 nights ago. I will be sending my carb to him for "calibrating". He asks a LOT of questions about my car configuration to determine exactly how he will set it up. One point of our discussion was the air cleaner. I explained that I was going to run a K&N open air cleaner when on the street and then put my GS air cleaner on for shows. He told me to run the GS, as it is actually better due to pulling in a cooler air from outside the engine compartment. It does make sense as cooler air is more dense.

I figured I would pipe this info in...

    Here's something to consider.
I was running my stock ram air set-up and decided to go to a K$N filter. You know, the one with the top filter also. I think they call it an air hog or something of that matter.
Anyhow, immediately after putting on the the K&N filter my car developed a short hesitation upon acceleration. THE CARB WAS LEANING OUT! I had to goup one size accelerator discharge nozel to get it smooth again.
Seems to me my K&N filter did infact flow more air into my carb.
I agree that the cool air is a major factor to consider.
    Hopes this helps.
BUt it probably just makes it all more confussing.
