Hi everyone. I came across v8buick.com a few days ago while browsing the net for some parts. After reading through some forums, I figured I had to join! My current Buick is a 1971 Electra 225 which I just picked up a few weeks ago. It is a super solid car with 56,xxx original miles. My plans are to freshen her up a bit and use her in my wedding this upcoming June! Even my fiance' is a Buick nut. She has a '98 Gran Sport Regal! This is not my first rodeo though. My past Buicks include a '74 Apollo, a '74 Century Custom, and a '65 LeSabre 400. I guess I can't post any pics yet becasue my post count is too low, so I'll come back and post them later. -Mike
Thanks for the warm welcome guys! I was wondering if you guys could recommend an ignition setup for me. As far as I see it I have 2 options to get rid of my points setup without breaking the bank: Option A - Replace the guts of my points distributor with an electronic distributor conversion kit form either Accel or Mallory (or equivilant) OR Option B - Replace the entire points-style distributor with a late model HEI. ~ the problem here is I don't know if a SBB distributor or another SB-GM distributor will work with a BBB engine. Another issue is that I believe points-style ignitions only receive 9 volts, where as a HEI distributor requires 12. Now in the past I've converted both of the '74's I mentioned in my first post to HEI PRIOR to knowing the old points systems only receive 9 volts, but I never had a problem with them. Which option is more common?
Mike: Don't forget to put your first name in your signature, not everybody is reading your introduction post :TU: For the photos: You can post them, using the board's attachement function. Or, if you use an URL, just type http://w ww (and the rest of the address) :Smarty: About your other questions: You better open a new thread in the right section of the board :Comp: (If you remove the resistor wire, you can operate your ignition at 12 V )
Welcome to the club.As to the Hei,yes just put a 75,76 in there, there's no computers in them. The 350 and 455 are the same, you just have to change the distributor gear, the 350 gear is a bit larger the the 455.Make sure you connect it to the fuse box,the wires from the 71 are too thin to carry a lot of electricity, and you don't want to burn the harness.BrunoD.
Yep, that is how I choose to do it, got a HEI from a -75 Electra w. 455. Don't forget to set up/modify the mechanical advance. Look into Larrys "power timing" thread. It is in the FAQ section.
Welcome! Changing to HEI might cause a conflict with the distributor and the radiator hose. I changed my '55 ten years ago. No problems! I think it's a pertronix. (I don't remember)
Thanks everyone. I'm sorry if I posted a question in the wrong forum. Honestly, the last car I converted was my '65 LeSabre. It had the 300 c.i. in it and I want to say I used the Accel electronic guts. I like the OE look of a points setup, but I hate.....HATE adjusting them. I think that route will save me a lot of time and hassle in the long run.
Indeed. I wish mine was silver. I read up on your build. Nice work btw! I'm not all that far from Elmhurst.
Ok. I'm back with some pics. For some reason, my guess is for security purposes, the forum wouldn't let me post pics unless my post count was 10 or greater. Well, I'm there so here's some pics of my Electra.
Found a few old pics of my '65 Lesabre I thought I'd share too. Anyone here ever have that one car you sold that you'd eat a gaint steaming pile just to get it back? ^ this is the one I'd do that for :blast:  :spank:
