Aftermarket fuel tank question.

I followed a link from one thread about fuel tanks to an online store.

I was just wondering how I can tell if I need the EEC or non-EEC unit, how many vents, etc. (The answer is probably staring me in the face.)

Is your car a California emission control equipped '70 Skylark? Any emission controls under the hood besides the vapor return line and PCV valve?

Doe your gas cap say "open slowly, not vented, fuel may be discharged" or something like that?

Crawl underneath and take a look right over the passenger side of the rear axle. Look up there and you'll see the back of the tank. How many hoses or pipes can you see coming out of the corner of the tank there?

    Umm...
    • I don't think it was built for CA.
    • It didn't have the original engine when I got it.
    • There are 2 lines between the tank and pump (a third going to the carb).
    • It has that canister-looking thing (with hoses) behind the driver side headlights (vapor canister?). Nothing else.
    • The gas cap is not original - and it doesn't talk. [IMG]
I'll have to crawl under there and look at the vent(s). Since the tank leaks I've parked it and not touched it in a while.

    1) get a talking gas cap
2)as far as I know, 1970 Buicks with a vapor canister (probably charcoal) have California Emissions controls. That may be something to look into
    3) I don't mean how many fuel lines go between your sending unit and fuel pump. I mean that if you get under the car at the rear axle, on the right side and look up, you'll see the passenger back corner of the tank. You'll see some hoses or lines there. These are not your fuel lines

You might want to get some more detailed info from one of the VIN/Body tag sleuths here about when your car was made and at what plant, to see if it should use the emission control tank, in my opinion

If I could get a talking gas cap, I surely would.

I know about the lines to the pump - just wasn't sure if the return line indicates something. (The engine I put in the car didn't have a return outlet on the pump - it was a '73 that had been in an '8x Century. Don't ask how I learned I needed that return hooked up, lol.)

Hopefully I'll be able to check the vents this weekend. Hmm, I wonder if enough fender is gone to avoid laying on the ground?
