Okay, the subject speaks for itself. Well almost, maybe I should have written "silent".

I am trying to find a muffler that will be very quiet. For this project (ignore the car in my .sig) it may strangle a 455, that's fine. But I don't want to hear it.

Only requirements: Made with the internal metal baffling, not fiberglass. Minimum 2-1/8" inlet/outlet, preferably 2-1/4" or 2-1/2", I will adapt. And nothng too huge, I'd like it to be kinda small (18-20" long max.). And FWIW, it will be going in a '69 Buick.

Pretend this is a show-type car, not a performance car, so I can restrict airflow. But I'd like it to be super quiet. No "it sounds good at WOT" or "it is pretty quiet but has a nice rumble".

Anyone know of a quiet muffler?

    Thanks!

I had a local shop bend me pipes and put on stock type mufflers from ARVIN. My car has a mild performance 455 and 2 1/8" primary tubes and I cannot hear the engine if I am doing about 45 mph unless the top is down. At idle the engine and exhaust is so quiet that you would not know it has headers without opening the hood. At WOT it does make some noise,("wwwwwwwwwwwwwwwWWWWWWW!") but it does not sound like a race car and let's face it at WOT it's going to make a little noise.

One of the ARVIN mufflers did explode on the highway though. Had it replaced for free and the owner of the shop (Ecco in Quincy, Ma.) kept it to show his supplier because he had two fail that month. The top of the muffler blew out like you had cut it with a can opener at a perfect 90* angle. The owner had pictures of GSs framed on his walls, so I knew he wasn't gonna screw me!

    Thanks, good to know.

I'd never even heard of Arvin before, but after doing some web searching I guess they are actually pretty big! I will try to find a shop that sells them.

Has anyone ever tried the Year One mufflers? They sell a standard and high-quality version, I wonder if those are nice & quiet. I've seen GS's at shows that are nice & quiet, so that must be what they are running...?

    Thanks!

Try mufflers that are intended for luxury cars, like Cadillac or Lincoln. Another option is to look at the mufflers used in the new Lexus big sedans, they have V-8's and are real quiet.

Although it would really hurt me to admit I used a luxury car muffler on any of my own cars........:eek2: :eek2: :eek2:

I think you can find something that will work, most stock mufflers are pretty quiet.

    quiet muffler

I just purchased a set of Spintech Sportsman Street Mufflers (Part #3333) and an X-pipe. These mufflers with the x-pipe are the quietest mufflers I have ever purchased (Toyota Camry quiet).

They are so quiet in fact I called Spintech trying to find a way to raise the sound output.

If you want quiet I whole heartedly recommend them.

PS The mufflers are the quietest when used with an x-pipe otherwise I'm told they are a little louder.

    mufflers

The are spintechs 2.5. Offset in/center out. The x-pipe was purchased at my local muffler shop I do not know the manufacturer.

Well first of all glad to hear I'm not the only guy who likes quiet mufflers. never liked ot be too obnoxious, let the torque speak for itself.

Anyway, I had a freind at the local minute muffler muffler shop put on their stock type replacement mufflers, I had tried dynomax and they were loud, droned inside and all that crap. Anyway, these ones have 2.5" in and out, the larger size offsets the loudness for killing power (large does not mean loud), very quiet and sounds excellent with the N25.

If you are interested, I can see if i can pull a p/n off them.

Funny thing too, he never told me they were 2.5", as the entire system is 2 1/4" right now...he just used another piece to sandwhich it in, they are actually quieter than the 2 1/4" pipe mufflers were. and thay have lasted a lot longer, he used to laugh cause I came back every year for another set of generic warrantied for life 2 1/4"mufflers (would blow out the baffles).

    Tim,

That sounds like a intriguing muffler. I am curious if you can find out who made them, a 2.5" quiet muffler would be great for what I am doing. Are they very big?

Also Sloan, I wouldn't have guessed that Spintech mufflers would be so quiet. I won't have an X-pipe in this setup, but still interesting. And "Toyota Camry quiet" would be just fine.

Thanks for the input (or should I say exhaust)!
