My AC compressor does not always kick on when I move the control switch to AC or MAX. The vacuum portion of switch operates correctly, as I can feel the vents correctly change from AC vents, off, defrost and floor. Sometimes I have to cycle through the positions a few times before the AC compressor will kick in. I don’t think it is a ground issue because once the compressor is on, it works correctly, not on and off. The system has been checked and it has the proper level of refrigerant. Again, once I can get the compressor to kick in, it cools great. Does anyone have an idea of what to check before I try to find a replacement control switch?
Next time it happens, leave the switch on AC or Max AC Pop the hood and use a screwdriver/piece of wood and spin the clutch on the compressor. Does it kick on? If so your clutch may be weak/dirty
The system was converted to 134 by the previous owner and the compressor and clutch look new. But, I'll see if giving the clutch a bump will make a difference. Thanks for the idea.
Larry, What you have is a switch that is like a set of points and the contacts get corroded so they don't make good contact. I have cleaned them and they will work for a while, but the fix I found was to insert a relay in the circuit. I have converted two cars that way 10 years ago and still working. You can put it out near the compressor or hide it under the dash. parts:30 amp light relay, 16 gage wire, terminals (female spades 4)( round one for ground) cut wire from ac switch to compressor attach end from switch to terminal 86 wire end going to compessor attach to terminal 30 run a wire from power source to terminal 87 " " " " ground to terminal 85 PM me if you need more info,I have a diagram I can send you. PS I went thru several switches before I did this:bglasses:
Doug, Thanks for this detailed information. As you know here in the Carolinas, AC is a critical system that needs to be reliable. At least my wife thinks so. Ha. I'll PM you for the diagram. Thanks again.
