I have run into a problem while reassembling my 401....the valve guide seals, themy make no sense. O.K., they look like an umbrella (umbrella style seals?) but i always thought an umbrella type seal fit over the valve guide.....anyway, these just slide on the valve stem and look just an umbrella, now, simple right, just slide em on and go right?........well ya i would, if they would fit inside the valve springs, anyway's, i'm stumped, i do hvae TA Perf. Stage 1 springs but the seals won't even fit inside the stock springs so it is not that. PLEASE HELP ME!!o No: ou: :error: uzzled:  :stmad:
If your machine shop can't find an umbrella style seal that will fit inside the TA springs, sounds like you'll need to have the OD of the guides cut down to something like .562" and run a Viton style seal. They have a snug fit on the guide and do a really good job with oil control down the stem of the valve.:TU:
But these umbrella seals won't even fit inside the stock springs and they came with the rebuild kit from Northern Auto Parts, it is a Fel-Pro gasket set.......oh well i have to take it back to the machine shop anyways......cam bearings are all )($#@&%)#@&$$@#)(*$#@)(&)@*$# up.......:af: :stmad: ou: :blast:
Casey - The Viton style seals (rubber with 2 metal bands around them) should fit inside those springs. Your machine shop pretty much HAS to have that style in stock...that's what comes with most Chevy kits!! Most commonly available in 11/32" or 3/8". Cost to convert to these seals should be reasonable too.
OK, i will ask my machine shop about it tommorow when i take the block down to get the cam bearings fixed.
