I managed to find a 1971 8.5 10 bolt Buick rear with bolt in axles for a great price. I brought it to a shop that does mainly transmissions and also does rear set ups. I left the rear with them and told them I wanted 30 spline axles, New Eaton HD Posi, and 3.73 gears.

Last week they called me and told me they were having trouble getting the correct axles. I PM'd Roger (oPH). He advised going with Moser for the axles, but I needed to know which axle bearings I had A9 or A10. I contacted the shop and asked them to measure the outside diameter of the bearings in the rear. Does anyone know exactly what that spec is? I'm thinking the A9 should be about 2.7" and the A10 is 2.9" Does that sound about right? Can anyone verify this.

The builder also had a question about the Eaton Posi for the 8.5 10 bolt fitting the early 1971 rear. He was told it would not fit. Does the Eaton Posi for the later C clip 8.5's fit the 71-72 8.5 10 bolt with bolt in axles? Anyone know for sure? I need to know when he calls back. Thanks.

Larry, the 30 spline Eaton carrier 8.5 carrier will fit. Have to use a diffferent carrier bearing & race.
Will ck back & post the numbers.

If your 8.5 A-body housing has the big square lugs on the bottom & uses the cutout style rear cover, it will take the A9 axle barings & axles.

    Got Posi?

To install the 30 spline carrier in '71-87 8.5 housings will need to substitute carrier bearings.

    LM 102949 bearing
    LM 102910 race

This should get you going in the right direction.

So I'm guessing that I need Eaton#19559-010 It says 88-96 C clip rears. This will fit the 1971 Buick Case with the above carrier bearing and race?

Larry too bad you were not closer I could built 3 at one time...lol. Hey OPH the LM102910 will not work with aftermarket shim packs and chevy original shim slugs. Only with BOP original shim packs with larger inner diameter.

Please use the LM102911 that is a better choice. The bearing will protrude though the 102910 race and hit the shim pack cuasing the bearing NOT to seat correctly into it. It is very slight BUT IS A PROBLEM. Ok. Good luck with the builder up there in NY if he needs any advice please do have him call.

The eaton will fit perfect with the correct bearings ( we use them on the spool s and call them spool bearings that set anyway. ) Get the axles from Moser you be happy I get them there too. A9 is is the bearing almost definetely unless you have a wagon 2146 is the correct seal for the application. Good luck with it. Jim

    Thanks Jim,
Believe me, if you were closer, I'd have you do mine also. I'll have Freddy Brown call you if he has any more questions.:TU:

Jim, thanks for catching my typo. Ck'ed my supply of bearings & LM102911 is the indeed the carrier bearing have been using with 8.5 30 spline Eaton carriers & 8.5 33 spline spools. First used that particular bearing in 9" builds, & was setting on a dozen, glad to find a use for the extras I've had in the tubs.

    Got Posi?
