Number one is I'm not sure what the proper name is, but I am looking for a "generic" solenoid that can be used to increase engine speed when the a/c is turned on. I am curious if one of the 70's Buick idle solenoids could be modified so that it comes on when the a/c is energized. I know these were used for emission reasons, but in theory it should work to increase rpm also. I'm working on a AFB 300 engine. Anybody tried this before??
Buick started using the idle solenoid midway thru the '71 model year. Normally wired to a pink in the engine harness that's energized when ignition switch is on. Easily wire it parallel with the AC compressor instead. The '71 version was a plain solenoid held in place with a 2 piece bracket. One half bolted to the intake, the other piece wrapped around the solenoid. The '72 & later version had the bracket pressed on & the entire unit was bolted to the intake. I think you could get almost any 12V solenoid to work but the brackets/clamps might be your biggest problem. I'm not at all familiar with the 300 engine intake. Where would be agood place to start looking for one? Any idea how much they cost? Looks like one off any car could be modified to work. Anybody got one they want to sell.
Might get a good used one here in "Parts Wanted". GM used them across the line for many years. Any salvage yards in your area? They are out there if you are persistent. I bought a NOS piece for mine a couple years ago. Just last June I bought a complete NOS kit GM sold to convert a '71 made with the dashpot over to the later solenoid.
