The A/C compressor on my 73 Electra makes alot of noise when I turn the A/C on. Is the compressor shot, or could it be a simple fix? The air still blows cold, it is just the noise - the belt seems to have the right amount of tension - not to tight - not to loose.
    Thanks

It sounds like the bearing in the pulley is shot.

    A/C Compressor bearing removal/replacement

Can the bearings in those compressor pulleys be replaced easily? I have a compressor on which the pulley has locked up; however, the clutch still seems to spin freely.

Once the nut in the center of the clutch/pulley assembly is removed, what else should be done to remove the clutch and pulley? What else would be required other than a wheel puller, or do you even need one of those?

Also, is there a good manual for repair on older A/C systems?

    Thanks in advance,

    Jamie,
I replaced my Clutch on the compressor of my 70 GS. Snap on makes a tool to remove and install the clutch and pulley. The biggest problem I had was with those snap rings that hold everything together. I borrowed the tool from a friend, maybe you can rent it. I was able to do it by removing the compressor from its brackets for extra clearance.

Thanks for the info, Larry. I may take a shot at doing the work myself; however, I typically have NO luck with A/C in older vehicles.
