A 350 questions

    Hi all,

    We are putting a GS engine back together,and I have some questions.
    First, do you guys actually use the exhaust brake that heats up the car quicker?, because i acciently broke it:Dou: .Well, it was stuck anyway. Are there any replacment that you could do instead of it?

    Second, the oil pump we put on had a booster plate with taller gears, now. Is this a good thing or will it mess up the engine?

    I wired open the exhaust thing you are talking about, because it was ticking. I had no problem with the motor warming up.

    I dont think I am going to use mine when I put the new exhaust in.If you need one let me know. I may have one in the parts piles

    might want it on a restro car but other than that its not a part you want in the exhaust flow.

    On the taller gears... The longer gears are now pretty much a no-no on the 455's as it loads up on the cam gear and causes problems. I believe the longer gears for the 350 are actually stock 455 gears. The 350 probably won't have the same problem with the longer gears but you do want to make sure your pressure isn't too high. I would recommend getting stock gears and a booster plate, along with an adjustable pressure regulator.

    On the exhaust riser thing, ditch it.

    How do i know how high the pressure is, because we already put the pump on.

    By ditch it, do you mean to not put it on at all, or weld it open or what?

    You can check the oil pressure by getting a good quality oil pressure gauge and hooking it up to the hole that the pressure sender unit goes into, then if the pressure is too high, you could use the adjustable regulator to limit the max pressure.

    When Dan says ditch it, I'm pretty sure he means to not put it on.

    By ditch it I meant to take the butterfly out and weld the holes shut. You can't hook up the exhaust without it. Later manifolds do not have it.

    Get an oil pressure gauge, they are fairly simple to install. It should be mandatory that all Buick's have at least an oil pressure gauge...

    Hmm you know I wonder if someone could make a kill switch for that. They make switches so if oil pressure gets to low the car will die what about one that will kill the motor if pressure gets to high? Somewhere before cam walk can / could happen.

    15 years ago, back when the longer gears were "in", I put some in my 350, and haven't had a bit of trouble in the last 175,000 miles. I don't remember which pressure relief spring I've got in there, but it maxes out at 40-42 psi, and has 10-15 psi when hot at a 550 rpm idle.

    As far as the exhaust flapper thingy, get rid of it, the engine will warm up just fine without it, you don't want the restriction in the exhaust, and if it sticks shut, you can be in for a world of engine hurt. My high school buddy's Impala had its flapper stick shut, heated up the manifold cherry red before we caught it, and the engine never did run worth a darn afterwards...
