99 Tahoe Transmission?

Does anyone know which transmission is in my 99 Tahoe 2WD?

I'm trying to diagnose a problem that I hope isn't terminal. At cruise speed, it feels like it won't kick down if I give it a fair amount of gas. It feels like it shudders for a split second, and never downshifts. Is there a kickdown switch somewhere?

Or is it time to sell it before the tranny takes a real dump? I'm nervous about it starting to slip.

Not sure which trans it is but if it slipped, it doesn't sound good.

Smell the fluid on the dipstick. Burnt?

There is a TV cable on the bottom of your linkage for shifting up and down though. It does come out of adjustment once in a blue moon. My friend is always messing with his TV cable to get it to shift right.

It doesn't necessarily feel like a slip, but more of a clunk or miss. It's not misfiring, I've already confirmed that. It just seems like it's bogging at those low RPM's because it won't downshift.

Well I would start by adjusting the TV cable.

    Smell the fluid too.

If you can't figure out how to pull it out and re- adjust it, seek out someone who can show you how to. It's not difficult. Do it once and you'll be able to do it.

I don't think the '99 has a detent cable. It should be a 4L60E, all electronically controlled- even passing gear.

I am just now figuring that out. There is no cable. And from what I am seeing on the interwebz, it is the 4L60E.

Fluid smells good. I wonder if the filter is old and clogged. I guess I should just change the fluid and filter first, ehhhhhh?

Scan it for codes, also. Some of the codes that affect trans performance won't turn the SES/CEL light on right away, and vice versa- an engine not performing correctly really affects these trans. How many miles on it?

No codes came up. I am going to change trans fluid and filter, engine oil, dist cap, fuel filter now.

It has 166xxx miles on it. I have no idea on history, I've only had it for a few months. It had the original spark plug wires in it when I changed them. UGH This isn't looking good.

    NJBuickRacer I'd rather be racing...

Try cleaning your MAF sensor, it may help. Line pressure/downshift is partially based on the MAF reading. The shudder you're getting is most likely from the TCC, there is a kit to update the PWM type you have. It's included in the HD2 Transgo kit for 4l60e, which is how I got rid of the same issue on my 96.

Well, I think I'm in the clear...I'll find out if it's fixed when I get it on the highway tomorrow morning.

I changed the oil, trans fluid and filter, fuel filter, distributor cap and rotor, serpentine belt, and tensioner pulley. It was squeaking terribly. I drove it about 10 miles tonight for dinner and it seems to be driving very smoothly and is downshifting when I tell it to.

I was preparing myself to get ready to unload this thing on Craigslist ASAP:laugh:
