Hello all i've read the sticky on 9 3/8 rearends and i still have a couple questions. Are there any options to have a posi without finding another 9car 3/8? Im not sure if im correct on this, but can a 8.5 rearend be used as a substitute, if so how hard is this conversion? Any help and info would be greatly appreciated.

If it is a post 70 model 9 3/8 you can use an Olds as a donor.

Maybe Pontiac B and C body cars with big engines as well after 70. In other words after 70 they will interchange with Buick 9 3/8. They made these post 70 style rears 71 to 76.

is it just the carrier that is gone or is it the whole axle assembly?
    I've got a carrier+ gears from a 74 2.93 posi. (9 3/8 riviera)

Well i had a complete 9 3/8 from a donor, the car still has its original rearend in it. How hard is it to switch the carrier? How much?

Ok guys this is my newest posi question. My car is a 72 limited, I've found a guy that has just the center posi section our of a 74 centurion. My question is how difficult is this to switch the carriers? If there's a write on this please point me in the right direction as I couldn't find it when I looked. thanks much

The procedure isn't for the faint of heart, and it'll require more than a simple writeup. Here are a couple of videos to give you an idea of what you're up against:

If you're staying with the same gearset, the good news is that you shouldn't have to mess with pinion depth, but you will still need to be able to check and adjust carrier bearing preload and gear backlash.
