Came across this rear gear set for sale the guy says it's a 60's buick 9 3/8 posi. I asked for more info and pics of the numbers on the ring gear to confirm ratio, just waiting for his response. Just thought I'd ask here if anyone can give more info base on these pics from the ad? Thanks!
Ok so got some more info, apparently it was in a Riviera, 12 bolt Ring gear. The numbers on the ring gear are 1375349 41 12. So I know by the 41 12 it's a 3.42 gear set but does the other number tell which gen 9 3/8 it came from,60-66, 67-70, 71-75?? Also how critical is it to have the pinion gear with the gearset and carrier, as he no longer has the pinion gear for it he said.
I thought I've read/heard about guys swapping out gears and carrier's without changing the pinion gear on here before??
That's what I figured Gord, last one I had was from a 69 Riv GS and I sent it to Australia. This one if I buy it I may keep for a bit just incase I want to switch up from the 3.07 I got currently.
The matched ring & pinion gears can work fine on a different carrier, may just require some shimming (pinion depth, preload & backlash) setup. Not sure about using a ring gear with a pinion gear from a different set, that might be trouble. Devon
Always learned that ring and pinions wear to one another. Mixing and matching is a differential death sentence. I'd be interested to hear if and how others have done it without issues.
I thought I read about guys just switching the gear set and carrier but maybe I was mistaken and part of that switch was the pinion gear also, but maybe it wasn't mentioned?? Not sure?? It does suck that the pinion gear is missing I was looking forward to picking this set up. I don't want to destroy my rear end either so if it's not recommended to swap gear sets without swapping pinion gears then I wont risk it.
I have an entire rear out of a 69 Riv gs in Arizona in my garage which I want to us the guts for my COVID cat. Without the pinion the carrier is still good for the posi?
The only problem here is that the posi carrier is designed for the 3.42:1 gear set, so you'd still need to find a set of 3.42 gears. Your 3.07:1 gears won't work...the 3.07 pinion gear diameter is bigger due to the higher tooth count. In other words, the 3.42 posi carrier would put the 3.07 ring gear too close to the pinion...the carrier would never bolt into place due to the interference. http://assets.superchevy.com/f/8844511.jpg? I hear what you're saying. I just meant to have a spare carrier that way if I come across some gears only. As you know these 9/38 rears have 0 aftermarket support so these parts are really hard to find. Did GM make a non posi 3.42 for the 9 3/8 rears? If so this carrier could help someone out that has a peg leg 3.42.??
Possibly, but even more likely someone with a toasted 3.42 posi + good gears would love to find a replacement as well! Devon
That's another valid point! I think I should try and grab this sucker anyways. The guys not asking that much for it.
I would grab it if it's not ridiculously priced. Nothing wrong with having one for no reason and either finding a gear set in the future or helping someone else out that is in need.
