    86

What is the difference between 86 and 87, and I've seen some nice ones sell from here for that price range(3shields John) for one., so that is where I'll start. Bill

Grille on the 86 is chrome.

I think the only change is the 86 has a chrome grille and the 87 is all black.
    Not sure about that though.

There are usually a bunch of Turbo cars for sale in at Bowling Green...

    Good Luck

The 86/87 has the intercooler and latest improvements - last of the breed.

"The 1986 Buick Regal Grand National (WE2) Marked a new era in Modern muscle car performance. Buick made some significant changes to the 1986 Grand National's powertrain that would make it one of the most powerful V-6 produced in the 1980's.

With the addition of an "Air-to-Air Intercooler" (which cooled the charged intake air, which everyone knows a cold turbo is a happy turbo), slight turbo changes, as well as modified upper and lower intake manifolds, and a redesigned exhaust system, made this car far more efficient than its earlier sibling. Horsepower was now upped to a respectable 235 at 4,000 r.p.m., and a Rubber melting 330 ft. lbs. torque at 2,400 r.p.m.. Other notable changes included a revised front air dam (with opening in the center to allow cool air to reach the Intercooler duct).

Grand National option for 1986 included:

    Black (19) exterior color
Black bumpers, rub strips and guards
    Black front air dam
    Rear deck lid spoiler
    Chrome plated steel wheels (4)
    Grand National and intercooler identification
Front bucket seats (583 trim code)
    Full length operating center console
    Performance tuned suspension

Additional 1986 Regal Grand National Options

    Hatch Roof (CC1)
    Silver Glass Astroroof (CF5)
    Electronic Touch Climate Control (C86)
    Electronic Rear Window Defogger (C49)
    Electric Door Locks (AU3)
Remote Electric Trunk Lock Release (A90)
    Manual Seat Back Recliner (AT6)
    6-Way Power Driver Seat (WG1)
    Power Windows (A31)
    Electronic Cruise Control (K34)
Front Seat reading lamps (C95) Not avail. with option (CC1)
    Electronic Instrumentation (U52)
    Theft deterrent system (YA6)
    Twilight Sentinel Lamp Control (T82)

1987 was the final year for the rear-wheel drive G-body, and Buick wasn't going to go out with a whimper! 1987 marked the largest Turbo Regal output (except1978) with a total 26,555 units (20,193 of which were Grand Nationals (WE2). With minor changes from 1986, the Grand National got a 10 H.P. boost to 245 at 4,400 R.P.M. and torque went up to a whopping 355 ft. lbs. at 2,000 R.P.M.! (at 355 ft. lbs. of torque it could turn the tires over like space saver spares on a Top Fuel dragster! Yikes!)

Because of their stylish good looks and street beating performance, at a reasonable price, the 1987 Turbo Regals are becoming hard to find, and hard to beat at the track. Next time you pull up to a black Regal on the street you had better beware!

Grand National option for 1987 included:

    3.8 liter engine with intercooler
    Automatic transmission with overdrive
    3.42 axle ratio
    Gran Touring suspension
    Fast Ratio power steering
    Sport mirrors
    Turbo boost gauge and Tachometer
    Leather wrapped steering wheel
    Air conditioning
P 215/65R15 eagle GT Blackwall tires
    Chrome plated steel wheels
Black; bumpers, moldings, grille, and exterior trim
    Full-length operating console
    Reclining front bucket seats.

dditional 1987 Regal Grand National Options
    Hatch Roof (CC1)
    Silver Glass Astoria (CF5)

The only REAL difference I know of is the chrome grill on an 86 vs black on the 87 they're basically the same cars 86 and 87. but thats easily changeable and affordable LOL.

    not sure

if I remeber correctly, the '87's were faster but I can't remeber why. I don't know if it was a bigger turbo, intercooler or maybe injectors, but they were faster methinks.

The 87's were rated with more HP over the 86 model, but did not have more HP. The 86's were just rated to low. One is just a fast as the other. The 87 GNX is another story,(much faster)this car had the changes to the turbo, etc.

And with the prices on the X's getting WAY on up there, you can buy 4-5 VERY nice GNs for the price of 1 GNX. I love the GNX, but its just priced where I will never get to own one. Who knows, may drag the values of the GNs up with them...........

Bill, Im looking at getting another car with more miles on it so I can "play" a bit harder than I do with the one that I have. Might keep both, but on the fence with that decision right now. The one I have now is sorta rare'ish, void on many of the options. Its a solid roof car, no p/w, no p/seat, no p/door locks, no cruise. Main options are G80 (posi), rear window defroster, tilt, and I guess thats about it. "Light" weight car of sorts. Will update once I know for certain. May be too far from you anyways now that i think about it..... :Dou:

I think the site is down right now, but once it gets back online, http://www.gnttype.org/ is a FANTASTIC reference site for these cars. Its a MUST READ! Good luck with your search. :TU:
