There's a guy on the board (BuickStreet) who bought one and promptly threw it in the junk pile. He's a good second opinion...

I've never dealt with one myself, I just remember the horror story...

    (no offense Scott!:pp )

    none taken! http://www.v8buick.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=24741&perpage=25&pagenumber=2
this is the original thread from buick street, to which i also posted my experience of no problems and i like my 850. i just went backand re read the entire thing (never followed it last time) and read about his problems. i would observe a couple of things:

    1. a dried out accelerator pump is not unheard of on Q-jets and while in my opinion it is inexcuseable in an expensiver new carb shipped down under, that thing had to set on the shelf for a long time!
    2. i never had the fast idle problems, mine was set at 1800 as well, but i knew how to adjust it and re set it at a more reasonable 1200 right off.
    3. my secondaries needed some fine tuning to my combo, as did jetting. i think you can expect to need some fine tuning no matter what kind of carb you purchase and the more familiar you are with it, the better success you will have with it. that said, i feel there is more wrong out of the box with the carb buick street purchased than a sticking accelerator pump and i hope he has been sent a replacement from summitt/edelbrock. as i said, mine has been perfect-but i must add-i got maximum performance from my combo by re jetting it.

I have one that I am thinking of selling. It was on a car that I bought and has a broken choke cover that is not cheap to replace, aprox. $60 if I remember correctly. It seems to work fairly well but does have a problem with a sticky accelerator pump which is a pain without the choke. I am no fan of the quadrajet and will be replacing with a holley in the spring. Contact me if any interest.

Hi, Steve. I've had one on my 462 for over three years and have been very happy with it. My 2 cents!

Sorry for the slow response- been out for a few days. We didn't have to rejet, although the car has never been tuned at the track or on a dyno. Motor runs great and pulls hard thru the shift points- 5,500. Had a bog early on with the secondaries opening too quickly, but no problem after a little adjustment. The only other problem was fuel supply. Went to a Mallory 110 at the tank, helping out the STG 1 pump. That fixed the starving at higher rpm's. Gas mileage stinks, but who cares. Didn't build it for that! Good luck.

Just for the record. I have tuned 3 quadrajets on this same motor and got them all to perform very well. I have a huge collection of rods and hangers and although I have never had to tune the primary side myself, I've had it done for me at the dyno tuner.

The carb had all the parts I would have swapped over anyway and reports to have had all the trick internal stuff already done to it from the factory. I spent a few weeks trying to get it to run right and the closest I got was getting it to work at slow speed cruising like a grandma. Other than that it was junk. Still is. Maybe it was just too big or my tuning skills weren't up to it. I'm sure I just bought a lemon that was built by someone who was having a bad day. I'll try ebaying it, maybe someone else will be able to get it to work. The carb is still almost new (I only ran it for a week or two until I gave up trying to tune it for hours every day) I still have all the paperwork and manuals and the original box and foams if anyone is interested and they think they can get it to work, make me an offer.

The carb is still sitting on my bench and Summit never replied to my dozen furious emails (they started out calmly and got more angry after each email was not responded to. I'm sure they all had a great feeling of power each time they deleted my emails. All in all, it was a great way to burn AU$1150. Thanks Summit and Edelbrock. I'll be sure to give you more of my business in future.
