I've located a 85 GMC Truck with a 3:42 limited slip for $150 is it possible to swap it to 68 Buick I know it will take some modifications but I want to know if its a good ideal or not.

    TIA,
    Chris

Buy the posi carrier (hopefully it is not the gov-lock anti-slip rear, if so, leave it where it is) and the gear set. You can not use the axle housing.

The rear in the truck is a 8.5" center section. Your 68 has an 8.2"
You need to get a 71-2 Cutlass/Skylark 8.5" rear and have it rebuilt and you can install the truck gears and posi unit.

    How do I spot gov-lock anti-slip rear ?

The gov-lock has a flyweight/governor on a torsion spring. Do a google search or Ebay search and you will see what I describe. It is/was a horrible design and they destroy themselves easily.

Those rear axles usually sell for $125-200 depending on condition, rust pitting, etc.

my truck has the 14 bolt gov-lock, it still works, but what a nasty system it is. when that thing locks the truck bangs like I got rear ended or something. can't believe GM let that out the door..
