'83 LeSabre + '96 Caprice rear end?

    Hello all!

I have a 1983 LeSabre coupe with an open differential. I also have a 1996 Caprice (9C1, the "police package") which I'm in the process of parting out.

Some time back I recall reading something, somewhere, which claimed that this Caprice's rear end was essentially a drop-in replacement for any of the older B-bodies like mine. The prospect of gaining posi and rear discs is tempting, especially if I can do it with parts I have on hand.

Needless to say, I have some measuring to do - and there's also the issue of gear ratio differences, disc vs. drum, 5x5 vs 5x4.75 wheel bolt patterns, etc. But right now, it's just a crazy(?) idea that I'm doing a little initial research on.

I'm curious... has anyone here ever attempted something like this? If so, what was the outcome? Your experiences would be useful in determining whether this would be worth pursuing or not.

Along the same vein: to resolve the issue of having different wheel bolt patterns in front and back, I've heard of people swapping in the spindles, hubs, etc. from the front of a newer car (such as my '96), which again was claimed to be a direct fit. Also curious if anyone knows whether there's any truth to that one?
