So what alternatives could I use for a rear diff. I have access to a rear diff "8.5" with discs form a mid 90`s impala SS. Like caprice style. Would it work? I think they work on the 3rd gen caprice, anyway. 68 Skylark is an A body right? Sorry, kinda new to these cars! Thanks! Chops
For one thing, I suspect all of the pickup points will not match up. Second, the bolt circle is probably 5x5 instead of 5x4.75 and the studs will be metric. If you can find a good 71-72 A-body housing, you can probably use the posi and maybe the brakes if you get the rotors redrilled.
10 bolt 8.5 will need different upper control arms - Then the rear is too wide, lower control arms are too wide - shocks mount in the front of the axle tube a body behind the tube - spring perches need relocating - wheel bolt pattern different - 9.5 to 11: brakes different - WELL that might cover everything...lol. There are plenty of different rears from 1965-1972 that will work direct bolt in.
Perfect, thank you! Ok so where I live I am very limited to old car parts so I`d like a rough list of the cars and years that have a diff that works, I dont care if it`s an 8.5 or a 12 bolt, just anything I can put 456`s in and a posi! There really aren`t any parts for the 10 bolt, not that I`d want to use it. Another question, is the 10 bolt in my 68 skylark same as any other 10 bolt as say a chevrolet 10 bolt? Thanks you! Chops.
Internally, the 8.2 10 bolt in your Skylark (if it is original) is different from the 8.2 Chevrolet 10 bolt.. The entire rear will swap in though.(67-72 A Body) You might have to use a hybrid rear u joint. Your Buick 8.2 will be bolt in axle, while the Chevy will be C clip.
In northern ontario canada. Found a 12 bolt from a 68 chevelle, freebie, does this diff work??? Thanks!
