I have a 1970 GS stage 1 with a 8.5 28 spline bolt in axle set up. Will 8.5 28 spline axles out of a 1970 camaro work? Are they the same lenght.... o No: Thanks Billy.
A 70 rear is an 8.2. I think they are the same length, but the Camaro has c-clip axles "different housing ends". The 70 "8.2"rear has a 45 degree pressure angle and the 71 "8.5" has a 30 degree. Does this help?
'71-72 8.5 A-body rears were avail in 3 different axle housing/tube combinations & with three visually different axles. -most common '71-72 8.5 A-body axle has 3 holes in flange & takes A-9 axle bearing, -least common had 4 holes in flange & used the A-10 axle bearing. -late in '72 production, some 8.5 A-body rears were built with 4 holes in axle flange & axle was machined to take A-9 axle bearings, not the A-10's. This last style will interchange with the 1st variety. Been a while since I've test fit, but to best of my knowledge none of the above 8.5 axles will interchange with '70 Skylark 8.2 axle, though the '70 Skylark axles uses same A-9 bearing & 712146 seal Need good stock '71-72 8.5 axles, have extras, as have been buying more & more bolt-in 8.5 A-body axles in 30 spline from Moser. Hope this helps. :3gears: Roger
axles. Thanks for the info guys. I had seen some strange axles on ebay for a $150.00 and was not sure if they would work. They were out of a 70 camaro and thats why i asked. I am just going to buy a new set of moser axles from summit they cost $233.00 and i will not have to worry about them fitting. Billy.
Summit's $233 price is for Moser c-clip retention axles, not bolt-in axles. Moser bolt-in axles for an 8.5 A-body in 28, 30, or 33 spline will run $315 a pair, + shipping, + axles studs (often cheaper to have Moser install). Usually around $350 to one's door, in the US. Now if one one owns a chassis shop, etc, & did a large buy-in with Moser... will get a slight break. Still have to install retainers, new axle bearings & seals. Figure another $45 with Timken A9's & seals or another $60 if one has the elusive A10 8.5 housing...will need to know which one has before ordering axles Cheap insurance... Some will complain the above near $400 is too much expense & will risk running their 3800lb A-bodys down into the high-mid 11 sec 1/4's with stock 8.5 bolt-in or stock 12 bolt axles. Even have a few friends have been lucky running mid 1.50 60 foot times in their A-bodys on stock axled 8.5 rears. One of my own keepers broke a HD GM 12 bolt axle in the late 70's. Car sat till I bought it in '85. Cost of correctly replacing 1/4 panel with nos would have easily bought 6 pair of Moser bolt-in axles :ball: With todays price on quality bodywork, paint, & nos sheetmetal, I'd be out much more. :3gears: Roger
Summit axles. Hi everybody. When i called summit i told them what type of 8.5 axles i had and $233.00 was the price they gave me and they said it was a replacement axle with a bolt in axle and no c clips. I made sure that they knew it was a GM corporate 8.5 28 spline bolt in axle and that it had no c clips. Billy
8.5 axles. You are right roger. The custom alloy axles are $315.00 a set and thats what i am going with. My axle flange has three holes. Two the same size and one that is bigger thanks for the info. Billy
