    Hi all,

I just recently have been able to drive my GS on the street. I found that under full throttle acceleration, that the car will not make the 1-2 shift until I back out of the throttle a little. Is this a problem with the switch on the pedal or the switch in the trans that it is connected to :Do No: Any help would be appreciated.

    Thanks,
    Harry

    EDIT: for spelling

Check the usual things. Modulator, make sure it is getting vacuum, and that there are no leaks, on both ends. Take the modulator out, and vacuum test it to make sure it holds vacuum. If there is any ATF on the vacuum side(point the vacuum nipple down), the modulator needs to be replaced.

Does the transmission kick down normally? If it does, the gas pedal switch, wiring to the trans, and the downshift solenoid are not the problem. Apply 12 volts directly to the downshift connector (L/S of trans, vertical spade connector) Can you hear a click?

Which leaves the governor. Was the governor ever modified? Did the car always have this problem, or is it you never noticed? You can remove the governor, and make sure the weights, and valve move freely. If it's gummed up, spray it with some carb cleaner, lube it with ATF, and reinstall it.

    Larry,

Thanks for the advice. The trans was worked on, I don't know to what degree. I do know when the 1-2 shift happens under normal acceleration, it's very firm. The car downshifts normally. I'll check the modulator and put 12V on the switch just to be sure it works. As far as the governor, I don't know. John Campbell may be able to shed some light on what was done to the trans prior to my purchasing it from him. I know he said it was 'gone over' last year, before the engine blew up.

    Thanks again,

    Harry

    Harry,
You may need to tweak the governor somewhat. If the weights were lightened, it might shift too high for your liking. Have you ever really wound it out to say 6000. Are you sure it won't shift?

    Larry,

I haven't wound it out to 6K. It's hard to tell, the dash tach is off by at least 600rpm's, and I don't want to blow it up after just getting it road worthy again. I'll have to go buy a good tach and see.

    Thanks,
    Harry

I had to ditch my stock tach when it stopped working. I put in an Autometer tach that looks and works great. I always wanted to get the stock one fixed, but the Autometer is so accurate, I've been putting it off. I wish someone put the autometer guts in a stock housing, that would be the ticket. You need an accurate tach for sure.
