The vin is 4=Buick G=GS 37= 2 door coupe K=350-4bbl v-8 (GS) 2=1972 G = Framingham, MA The last 6 numbers is the production run numbers. The 76149 in the fisher body number Paint 53 is Cortez Gold Poly I believe. (only available on the skylark, sportwagon and GS) A65 is notch back bench seat (indicates you have a manual trans  ) The 134 is the interior trim color and reads as Covert (light tan). I think you may be reading the D3D wrong. It's probably 03D which is the build date 03 is March and D is the 4th week of that month.
Thanks gritty kitty I thought it was a real GS but wasnt for sure,it has an auto in it now but it has a 73 motor in itand they could have changed the trans alsobut i dont think so but it would be cool if it was a four speed cause i have a complete four speed setup for one of these. It also has a white interior also so something is fishy here.It needs alot of work but i'm glad i got it.
Because they notched the bench around the shifter. I know my 70 Chevelle was like that. So I assumed the GS would be the same. I thought they called that notched. Or is it the back of the bench so it folds down?
This is the notchback bench: The difference between this and the regular bench, is the split seatback and the fold-down armrest:beer These have to be the most comfortable seats ever :bglasses:
OK. But what is the bench seat called that is cut out around the floor shifter? Or it must have been a custom job on the seat. Because I've just searched and cannot find any pics of one. I have some pics of the car but not of the seat.
Someone here has a convertible that had covert and he said you can't get the color anymore. He redid his in saddle. So I'm thinking the interior on yours was redone and they used white.
It also doesnt have GS emblems on the doors or gauges or a tach i think in 72 that was all optional stuff am i right?
GS's did not cut out around the 4 speed shifter on the bottom cushon of the front seat when ordered with either the standard bench or the optional notchback bench seat. Either a custom job or a seat out of another car which did have that cut out. You cannot assume having a notchback seat means a 4 speed was present when new. In fact, most probably came with automatics. Notchback is like Adam stated...fold down armrest with a split front seatback. Probably the most comfortable of all the seating arrangements offered, IMHO.
Tach and gauges were never srtandard, always an option. There have been other threads on 72 door panel emblems; don't know the consensus, but plenty of combinations did not have them.
