To add some more confusion, I have a 72 Flint built 72 GS aircleaner here that has a white elbow on it and I am positive it is the original one.I can shoot a pic from the bottom to show that it is in a 72 aircleaner since it has the triangular shaped foam seal. I also have another which I am most certain is a 72 aircleaner that has the black elbow on it.This was used on my 73 GS since 73 GS 350 cars didn't come standard with a dual snorkle aircleaner. I know this air cleaner is from my 72 GS 350 car that was wrecked long ago.I also have a spare black elbow that has the slot on it as described above.
gs specific? that could be because the gs aircleaners have a hole only with no slit, the black elbow will not fit.so a clear elbow would have to be used.which would probably mean that the charcoal canister was different also.as pointed out the 1/4 hose will not fit.so maybye the three port canister that duane has mentioned was also a gs specific part and had a port big enough to fit the bigger hose needed for the clear elbow.into the books boys,we need to confirm this!!!!
GM parts manual circa 1976; cannister, vapour control 71-76 7028131 all v8 cyl; two line p/n matches both vert and gs 455 cans. Both two line. Also, just for a laugh, look at this pic I dug up off my old camcorder footage...look where line goes and yes the white elbow was on the car...WTF? Someone could have moved it of course but why?? Tim
here is a shot of the hole...it has a slit. This is a 72 gs cleaner (date coded sept 3/71-vert was made sept 9/71)...other 72 also has this, my 71 does NOT. Excuse the dust and crap, its been sitting for a while.
vacuum elbow ok so then the black elbow was 72 specific,as both the standard and gs aircleaners had the slit,in 71 the line went to the carb so they wouldnt have revised it then, the clear elbow seems to be a 70 specific part as it wont fit a 1/4" line and wont fit the 71 and later charcoal canister.unless you bought the car new,you wouldnt have really know if someone changed it.we can only go by the info we can get our hands on!!
the elbow on my 72 gs, built oct 71, is white. perhaps different factories had a different supplier or the replacement elbows were white. if it works, use it as is. where can a fellow purchase the clip that mounts the elbow in place?
tim: will check it out tonight, take a picture, and measure the o/s diameter of the ebbow & the inside diameter of the hose also. my brother's gs also has the same white elbow as mine.
Yeah, yeah I know I gotta let it go but this has been bugging me. here is the deal. Every 72 I know of in Canada seems ot have thw white elbow. Now if this is a 70 California only thing then whats up with that??? And look at this, picture taken during a review from CARS magazine of a 72 GS 455....I know its a crappy pic but look anyway....looks kinda white to me!! Wierd.
Here is a pic of a 72 stage 1 GS, also from a car review...I posted this one as I can't seem to find the rad hose strap as well. Whats up with that?? Hose connection is not as clear but also looks white? Maybe its a real early media car or something. later Tim
clear elbows maybye it was a california thing?notice both of the pics are of cars with the smog equipment.this is a confusing issue.but i think its safe to say that the clear hose is still not ganna fit 1/4 hose and the 71-75 charcoal canister.has anyone confirmed it fitting the 70 style charcoal canister?we need more input.
