Sure take some pic's and will see if it matches up do you think you have the three prong relay that it all plugs into also?

Thanks for getting back to me so soon,

Thanks for checking and getting back to me. I have been doing some research on this setup and from what i gather this is used on cars with air conditioning my car does not have ac so that may explaine the dash pot? :Do No:

    Thanks again,

'71 was a transition year from dashpots to the solenoid set-up. Kits were available at the dealer to convert from dashpot to solenoids,AT only when new.
    Solenoid Bracket: Gr.3.440 NLA/Sup # 1238410. Solenoid: Gr.3.440 # 1114421
Harness: Gr.3.440 # 8904591 No numbers in my Cdn. book other than AT cars.
Solenoid & bracket will be a real bear to find but they are out there. Solenoid is easier, they come up on E-Bay as NOS. Brackets are available too, check with anyone parting a '71 455 any size car. These are '71 only.
Harness can be made easily or go to www.americanautowire.com
They can help you or make it if they have the drawings.

Thanks Steve i did find a solenoid but nothing else does your book have a part number for the relay assembly? a dealer with an old parts book says its called a trans spark relay and the number he gave me was 3961573 i saw one on ebay but it was described as mounting on the firewall so (as usual) i'm confused.

Thanks again for your help! :beer

3961573 is a good number for the trans. spark relay on a '71 455 with ST.
Drawing shows it secured to the bracket with one screw & one hole that fits over a tab. Vendor might have confused it with an AC relay that goes on the firewall with two screws. They look a bit similar.

Had a look in my '71 chassis manual. No info. on your relay. An AC relay is not much bigger, if any. A relay is a relay is a relay. Electric coil pulls a magnet which in turns pulls/pushes contacts, causing them to change state.
If you can confirm the AC relay will mount I can sort out which terms & wires go where.
Big part of this will be the theory of operation?
In my 350 AT, ignition "on" energizes the idle solenoid. There is no relay. One of the pink wires from the trans. pigtail is ignition power. The other is powered when the AT is in high gear only, at the TCS. This allows more vacuum advance to the distributor at highway speeds. My 350 AT solenoid bracket is a bit different from your diagram. NO tab for the relay & closing bolt in a lower position.
Per the drawing from your ST car it might be similar, just can't pin-point why the relay is there. The two pinks from the engine harness would be the same. One ignition power to the idle solenoid. The other may be switched power from the trans.? to your existing TCS.

Thanks Steve for posting the picture appreciate it. There is somebody on ebay selling something very similar to your setup including the wiring is the picture you posted the 350 with AT? I found a solenoid and have the relay on order it will be two to three weeks before it showes up. From what I gather the relay mounts to the carb via the drivers side throttle body to manifold bolt. This kit on ebay comes with a diagram I will post it here so you can see what i'm talking about,

    Mark,
The one pictured is correct for my '71 350 AT. I meant to install the manifold last Spring, ran out of time. I usually do any planned work on the car during the first two weeks out of storage. Rest of the season I drive it only.
The relay in your diagram actually mounts to the solenoid bracketon an ST car. The piece mounted on the carb.bolt, pass. side, is the TCS, transmission controlled solenoid. Your TCS will mount here too.
I found a case with a broken solenoid. Bought a NOS solenoid for a 6 cly. Nova & installed it in my old case. They are all generally the same less the mounting & location applications.
I made the pink harness pictured. Bought a used/beat-up harness & copied it. Later bought another from www.americanautowire.com.
'71 seems to be the year GM was experimenting with emmissions devices.
Most impeded performance & didn't last long. Many ended up in the trash bin
& now used pieces are very difficult to find.

    Mark,
I was at NAPA Today & asked them to check into your relay. Listed for all V-8 engines, manaul trans. only. He showed me a pic & it looks like what you are looking for. This also showed up on the 6 cyl. engine & as an AC relay in other GM cars, same era.

Try NAPA # AR114. They have an on-line store, picture may be generic. Occasionally the US & Canada NAPA numbers are slightly different.

Thanks Steve you must have good NAPA folks where you're at I checked with mine about a month or so ago and they had no luck but now that I have a part number they should be able to figure it out now..many thanks :beer

I was lucky enough to find the solenoid for $12 and as far as the bracket there was a dealer part # of 1394994 that had three differnt styles of brackets and a wiring harness I was able to locate but it hasn't shipped yet..

Owner at NAPA is just great. Sees my truck coming down the road, he starts digging out all the old GM books. Wwe use the terms & numbers to match a new number.
