Norm I was at BPG show when your car showed up I gave it a thorough inspection and that car is definetly a a Big Block 4 speed 71 GSX. That car being a 71 Big Block GSX should have an 8.5 "corporate 10 bolt 3.42 posi rear axle. The code stamped on axle tube should be LWB. If that car was a non Stage 455 car and not a GSX it would have come standard with an LHB 3.42 open axle. Even in 1971, Buick saw fit to give Big block GSX 4 speed cars a 3.42 Posi LWB code axle standard only in a GSX. Post some new pics of that car, very unique piece.
Thanks for all the help, that is how I thought it was just wasn't sure. I really don't have any new pictures of interest. I have been checking some date codes and trying to determine just what I have. I haven't really started any restoration. Just making it driveable and safe at this time.
Engine was replaced in the late 70's. Carb is dated a replacement stage 1 and I purchased a correct stamped dist.
I see why the radiator decal info is interesting. You have looked on top of the gas tank and inside the car for paperwork?
Yes, the tank was dropped and nothing but clean tank. I did look all up in behind the dash and nothing stuck out. I will someday remove dash and check pillar post and cowl area. Nothing at this time.
I am the only one who sells the correct 71 Emmision Decal for the Stage-1. I had these made several years ago and spent a fortune doing them. The one most commonly sold elsewhere is a vinyl reproduction and is not correct and it says Stage-1 on it. Mine does not. Mine is as original correct size BG code. print is correct and made out of Polyeseter which is far more tough. They are $16 Shipped $26 if you want two. ---------- Post added at 12:42 AM ---------- Previous post was at 12:39 AM ---------- Did you check the frame for the GS455 part number?
How about the interior card under the passenger front seat springs? If it is still there, you should be able to lean under the front foot well and see it with a light.
As one of us who were still there that July evening and watched that car roll into the BPG '09 and pull up to the canopy observing that motley crew of characters empty out of the car, I will remember this car forever and will never forget that moment. As one of us that stuck around pouring over it, glued to it scouring for signs of authenticity or proof otherwise, the lack of proof otherwise with this specimen is all I needed as many others. It is as close to a barn find many of us will ever know. Good on you man! What a rush! There were almost 100 GSX at the event that day, but there is one that will never be forgotten. Aside from replacing those insanely wasted battery cables, I would not do any more than what is necessary and do as little to it as possible to keep it road worthy just to show it at all the shows you can and tell the tale. It has mystery history! I would love to see this car again some day but not restored, just surviving! Please keep us posted on this car. Cheers! MarkO
Seems that most interesting was the often quoted number (6) of colorsd available on the 71 X with the white one and this green one we found that number to be wrong. More interesting to me is if the car is a legit X I would tear into the interior I found a tag in my Suncoupe seat that has the SCO number wrtitten on it I understand a X will have it too. Mine was inthe springs but not visable until I tore the seat apart.
Yes the frame numbers are 455 Thanks for the deal, but my car already has the correct decal. I'll be interested if and when I decide to restore
A couple things from someone who owned one of very few documented 71 GSX. 1. Look for build sheet under drivers front carpet, not gas tank. That applies more to 70. 2. SCO will not be on that flint seat tag, but will be on the Build sheet( if you had one). 3. That tag shows: D35 sport mirrors U80 rear speaker 168 Black bucket seat interior. Do you have those options ? DL
D57, 4 speed consolette. Sounds like it's the right tag for your car. At the least you have a 4speed GS  DL
Thanks, I didn't have a clue what all these numbers ment. Where are these codes defined? How would I check them myself? Well the stripes prove the GSX part, so I guess I'm close. Only to find that missing link or should I say paper. Will we ever really know? Thanks again
Dl the one from my flint built Suncoipe has the SCo on this paperwork found it in the seat. If I can find where i stashed it I'll shoot a pic. I know my tag has my SCO number on it seems to mimic the data tag and GSX code isn't on there either
We were lucky with the Black GSX...3 build sheets in the car. One under the passenger side front carpet, one rolled up and stuck in the drivers side A-pillar and one above the radio. SCO number will be on it as well as a very large GSX option code.
