i have access to a 71 riv 12 bolt posi the car had 2.73 gears i beleive.whats it worth?.....thanks dave
i called my friend and he said it had 2.93 he thought.if interested i will confirm.whats it worth though?we got the ring gear but not the pinion.....
What is it worth? Hey Dave, Useless Parts I am gonna keep droping the price 'til I can tell you what they are worth. From the absolute silence.....I would say not much. :blast: Hope this helps.
71 riv has only 3.42 posi if it is 71 it must be 3.42 posi that was the only option available for riv that year ,that,s according to my factory manual,400$ you got your self a good deal for working posi :Brow: :Brow: and if it is 2.93 it is not not posi for 71 riviera
well its a posi and it came from a 71 riviera.also its not a 3.42.so if your correct it must have been changed by someone along the line i suppose.
These really don't bring the big bucks unless it's a complete rear end....drum to drum I paid $200 for just a carrier a couple years ago, but sold it to someone else because I found a complete rear end to swap out. These are also worth a lot more with a ring AND pinion gear.
Tommy, I think you're right....at least for the "available" gears. 2.93 or 3.42 I believe there was a 2.73 gearset for the Electras, too (71-72)
hmmm, looks like it's time for me to go get that 71 Riv GS and pull the 3.42 posi out of it.. not to mention the buckets and console as well as what might be a stage 1 engine :Brow:
1971-1972 Rivieras came standard with the 2.93 peg leg. 3.42 was optional posi. 1973 Rivieras had a 3.23 posi. 1973 Electras could also have 2.73 like the 1971-1972 Electras. Bob, Any chance I would be able to buy those heads off you if they are the "big valve" heads? o No:
In operable well used condition with a 2.93 posi, it's worth maybe $300. If said Riv rear was in good shape & was a 3.42, it would be worth much more. 3.42's are many many times harder to find than the common 2.93's. Personally I hate gettng into "what it's worth" questions as there are a wide variety of responses, depending on what part of the hobby one is in, & in the end, what it costs to go through such a part & get it in top operating condition. There are folks reading Internet boards who own yards &/or work in yards & eat the I paid $$$$ posts up. These fellows believe they can get 2 to 3x a NATIONAL retail price out of rust pitted junk just because someone with no sense @ what there looking at, will come asking for it :af: Not talking super rare rearend cores either... no super expensive E-body Dana 60's, or '66 Nova 12bolts or BE coded '69 Camaro 12 bolts, just common rears. Will give an example... have been regularly pulling parts for the last 6 years in a large northern yard where the now near 80 year old owner asks & usually gets $500 & up for all used posi rears. Am talking near worthless 8.2 Chevelle 10 bolts, obscure 8 7/8 MP Pontiac rears, everything from the 60's & early 70's. Late last Fall, he quoted me $850 on a '69 GTO N 8.2 & it was still in the car (I'd pull it). I had ck'ed it thoroughly, & the nodular hsg & axle tubes were pitted, & the HD axles were chewed The core was so poor it would have taken hundreds of dollars worth of effort to make it look halfway nice, & it would never be pristine enough to go in concours car (my only need). As such, this core rear was worth maybe $500. Thats for a very picky restorer getting what amounted to a used (needing remachined) 4 pinion cone posi, willing to spend the money just because he needed the N housing to date a high point RAIV or Judge resto. I passed at $850, & just wrote the the housing casting number & non Julian date down. Two weeks before, & no more than 40 miles away, my good Pontiac restorer buddy from the area had been out yarding & found both a '67 & '68 nodular Pontiac 8.2 in a monsterous r/e pile. Both were 3.55 HD posis & were purchased for $50 each. Were they worth much more than $50 a piece, as hard to find core r/e's? YES, but nowhere near $850 each. Same rearend pile has numerous 9 3/8 Buick posis. I've climbed through it. To get them out however would take a jimpole truck or a couple days with a loader. Neither of which this 2nd yard owner has :3gears: Roger
well if it is posi and 2.93 the axel code should be QJ or QJO and if it is RBit is stage1 and GS ,I couldn,t find 2.73 posi for up to 71,but this might help Rear Axle Identification Provided by JOHN HUNTER, ROA #32499, Nisland SD (and the R.O.A.
