So i have a 1970 GS 350. This race was a little over 3 years ago at school, when this guy always talked trash about how his cousin's chevelle with a 400 small block was sooo bad ass and it had electric exhaust cut outs so it could run open exhaust. Judgment day finally came when he brought the car to school. After school we walked out to the parking lot and the entire time this guys friends are egging me on to race him and telling me how awesome this car is and how i am going to get my ass kicked. I just went on with it. My car has a stock 2 barrel 70 skylark motor with a 4 barrell put on it and headers and dual exhaust those are the only upgrades. it had a 2.56 open at this point too. upgraded to 3.42 posi best decision ever. anyways back to the story, so its the last week of school so the parking lot is packed so we get in line to leave and he jumps like 10 cars ahead of me and leaves the school before i can even get on the road out of school. so i follow the way he goes and we go up the hill to the highway. all the way up the hill he is romping on the malibu and i'm just easing into the buick and staying right with him. We get to the highway and on the onramp he gets a green to turn right and it turns yellow right when i get there, i slow to a pause and then go, he has probably 2 car lengths on me no and i see the onramp is clear so i wood my car and pass him on the 1/8mile long onramp. We then get next to each other on the highway and i waited for him to punch it then i would, and my car would catch 1st at 50 because of the 2.56s and i would walk on him. WE did this about 4 times with me beating him everytime. we got off in downtown and i got next to him and asked "why didnt you really open it up???" he said "screw you, i'm going home now" i drove off nice and easy, he never said anything about how awesome his car was after that lol
friend of mine has a '70 malibu 400 sbc, on a cruise today, I launched, and he saw nothing but my taillights
if i remember correctly, that 400 engine was not a fast motor. i believe there were also cooling problems with it.
The 400 Chevy is a prime motor for a decent rebuild. lots of torque, lots of RPM capability. 4.125x3.75 with a 6 inch rod. Follow that with a decent set of heads and it will run great, easily smoke a 350, well a 350 chevy that is.. :Brow:
