Hi, Does anyone know if 28 1/2" X 11 1/2" X 15" Hoosier slicks mounted on 8" Weld Pro Star wheels with 3.75 backspace will fit under a 1971 GS without modifications. The owner of the wheels says they are legal in the 10 1/2' drag classes . Whatever that means in ref. to thier true size. Regards Dennis

ps. I have adjustable air shocks on the car that I run at about 36psi

It doesn't sound like enough backspacing. Lon Bauer has wheels with only 3.75" backspacing and they are VERY close to the wheel well lip on top. You really need 4.5" backspacing to be centered in the wheel well with a 15x8.

Thanks. With the correct back spacing ,what is the widest slick you can get under a 1971 GS without rubbing or altering the wheel well.

I run the M/T 28 x 10.5 slicks on 8 1/2' wheels with 5" backspacing. I can't fit any more tire under my car. My car is a 72 GS.

On a 15x10 rim with 5.625" backspacing, I have a 325/50R15 tire that is 28" tall and has a 12.9" section width. This is the absolute maximum size street tire you can fit under the stock fender, and even that needs a slight "massaging" to ensure no rubbing.

But slicks grow as you go down the track, so I'd be guessing that Tom's slick is about the largest in the stock fender. I'm sure somebody has stuffed something bigger in there. But I don't think you want a slick rubbing up in the fender well during a 100+ mph pass.
