'71 Buick GS350 convertible. Split bench w/pearl white interior. I have some GM bucket seats that will fit this car, but are thrashed (and are not pearl white). If I wanted to do The Full Monty and completely restore the entire pearl white interior, which parts are not available new and must be dyed? Thanks
Re: '71 Convert w/Pearl White Interior: Which Parts Not Available as New & Must be Dy I believe that you will be able to completely restore them. I have a '72 Convert and had my front buckets & rear bench completely restored. Take a look at Legendary Interiors and I think you will find everything that you need. Cwilly
Re: '71 Convert w/Pearl White Interior: Which Parts Not Available as New & Must be Dy I understand that most of the pearl white parts are available for the bucket seat resto. I'm wondering if there are any interior parts that cannot be bought new and must be dyed pearl white. Thanks
Re: '71 Convert w/Pearl White Interior: Which Parts Not Available as New & Must be Dy all of your current plastic pieces - bucket surrounds, rear seat panels, kick panels, etc., will have to be redyed. u may be able to buy some of these pieces but they may not be of the quality of the originals. Be much less expensive to redye unless your stuff is badly worn.
Re: '71 Convert w/Pearl White Interior: Which Parts Not Available as New & Must be Dy How well will parts that are dyed Pearl White (such as bucket surrounds, door panels, etc.) match with Repro Pearl White parts, such as seat covers? Where do I buy the Pearl White dye, anyway? Thanks
Re: '71 Convert w/Pearl White Interior: Which Parts Not Available as New & Must be Dy Check with Sem product dyes
Re: '71 Convert w/Pearl White Interior: Which Parts Not Available as New & Must be Dy Guys you have to be very careful using what you call dye!!! You can get the correct PAINT! mixed in PPG lacquer and there is a factory bulletin on painting these parts using lacquer. You have to know what you are painting.
Re: '71 Convert w/Pearl White Interior: Which Parts Not Available as New & Must be Dy The actual paint name for painted parts to match 71 white is Ivory. The old Ppg lacquer code for this is 8850 from my 1971 Buick paint chart. This paint is the best to use on the polypropylene plastic parts like the kick panels and hard part of arm rests. You have bench so don't have to worry about seat backs. To paint the poly parts clean the hell out of them with simple green a brush and water. White plastic parts are often no good and chalky. You may be better off finding colored parts and paint them white. You MUST use either Bulldog or SEM clear adhesion promoter on the parts or the paint will run or peel. The poly parts like kick panels have mold release agents and this is why they are an issue. ABS plastic parts like automatic center console require no promoter or primer. Just paint but you do not have anyway.Use two coats of the promoter. One light followed by a heavier coat. Wait for the second coat to just be slightly tacky then color coat with two or three color coats. The Lacquer dries really fast. This is the factory GM bulletin method of painting. Paint in the shade or there will be issues. Lack of promoter is where many of these parts are destroyed. I have done several concourse cars this way with great results. The correct lacquer can be mixed in spray cans by APS Tower paints in Wisconsin and maybe others? I have no experience with SEM other than the adhesion promoter which works well. Do they mix exact GM colors? If not I would avoid. Since you have a bench you have the soft head rests. It may be best to re-cover them with legendary covers that will match the seat covers. All this being said the white is the toughest to match.
Re: '71 Convert w/Pearl White Interior: Which Parts Not Available as New & Must be Dy Hi, thanks for the detailed response. Just so I'm clear, you have a '71 with Pearl White interior, correct? Also, I presently have a bench seat, but am converting to buckets (which are black and need to be Pearl White). What types of trouble do you think I should anticipate? Thanks, once more.
Re: '71 Convert w/Pearl White Interior: Which Parts Not Available as New & Must be Dy I believe that pearl was 1970, not '71 nor '72.
Re: '71 Convert w/Pearl White Interior: Which Parts Not Available as New & Must be Dy My bone stock '71 convertible has a Pearl White interior. Thanks
Re: '71 Convert w/Pearl White Interior: Which Parts Not Available as New & Must be Dy My 71 was ordered with Pearl White, I believe it was a standard on the Riv's but only as an option on the Larks.
Re: '71 Convert w/Pearl White Interior: Which Parts Not Available as New & Must be Dy How well does the dye hold up on the seats themselves? Does it eventually rub off? Would it work on door panels (where your arm constantly rests when driving) and armrests? Thanks
Re: '71 Convert w/Pearl White Interior: Which Parts Not Available as New & Must be Dy The key is to use the prep materials first per instructions. I like The SEM dye.
Re: '71 Convert w/Pearl White Interior: Which Parts Not Available as New & Must be Dy Assuming I prep everything correctly, do the seats and armrests hold up to everyday wear? Or, does the dye eventually wear off these areas? Thanks
